Restaurant Marktplatz — Restaurant in St. Gallen

This is an edited review. Ok, so the bar saves this place, the restaurant/food side is poor to say the least. We went in a couple of nights ago. My fiancé had a burger. The prices for what you get, and the service levels, are insane. She had a burger. We were mildly ignored a bit at first, nothing horrendous, but it felt like we were slightly in the way. She ordered the country potatoes with the burger. When it came, they put fries on, no massive problem. I called the waiter back over and he acknowledged it immediately and went in to order the original choice. In his defence he didn't charge for the fries.

We asked for mayonnaise and ketchup, it never came, again, no huge problem but still. The "country potatoes" were cheap frozen tasting wedges (baby potato sized) and properly disappointing.

The service throughout was a millimeter away from rude. We eat and drink out a lot in st Gallen and people are usually far friendlier, not here. As I say, not outwardly rude, but offhand and we were in the way.

I/we absolutely won't be back to eat, but, the bar and bar staff are fantastic, in fact, compared to the floor staff, they're world class.

So given how pedestrian the food was, the disinterested "service" and the lack of attention to what we asked for, all at eye-wateringly expensive prices for what we received, we won't eat there ever again.

But

The waitress was rude. She forgot half our order, came back to confirm, then still only half the food and drink we ordered came out.

They were busy- she gave a snooty response to another table too “it’s busy and I’m working inside and outside…”

At the end I asked for my bill and waited 30 minutes to pay.

If you know it’s going to be busy on Saturday night wouldn’t you hire more wait staff? This was terrible service.

The food was OK, but the “hörnli mit gehacktes” I had could have been better too….

Sie hat mit mir per “du” gesprochen, was mich vielleicht nicht irritiert hätte aber da ihr Service auch schlecht war, war das “tüpfli uf em i”.

Seit Jahren kommen wir hier her und werden es wohl noch lange tun. Einst ein Lieblingsrestaurant unsererseits, so hat es in den letzten Jahren aber leider einen Stern verloren. Die Preise gingen frapant hoch und das nicht erst seit diesem Jahr (was ja definitiv verständlich wäre in der momentanen Lage). Der Lieferant der Pommes wurde gewechselt (schaaade, aber das ist schon ein paar Jahre her, dennoch vermisse ich die "alten" gewellen Pommes.)

Die Speisen sind gut. Die Zitronengrassuppe ist ein HOCHGENUSS! Die Pilze im Salat sind sensationell gewürzt. Aber die Pommes und die Zanderknusperli waren heute zu stark frittiert (die Pommes waren definitiv schon 2x in der Friteuse - und leider war das nicht das erste Mal der Fall, darf bei diesen Preisen eigentlich nicht sein, finden wir.)

Besonders der Saal im OG ist besonders schön. Eindrückliche Lampen, hübsche Dekoelemente, weisse Tischtücher und Stoffservietten, goldene Unterteller... alles was das Herz begehrt. Hier kann man dinnieren, eine gute Zeit verbringen und die Aussicht auf derm Marktplatz von St. Gallen geniessen. Auch befindet sich auf diesem Stockwerk ein Vintagefotoapperat - gratis darf hier ein Erinnerungsfoto geschossen werden. Einfach genial.

Die Einrichtugn im EG ist rustikal. Papierservietten. Tischset in schönen ROSAfarben. Die Toilette im UG ist im Winter extrem kalt und das Wasser kommt eiskalt aus dem Wasserhahn. Ich benutze definitiv lieber die Toilette im OG.

Das Personal ist grösstenteils freundlich und engagiert. Der eine Kellner heute war aber definitiv nicht wirklich an uns interessiert :( Zum Glück hatte er wohl anschliessend Pause und wir wurden von einer herzlichen Dame zu Ende bedient.

Nicht mehr das was es einmal war, aber...
