The Red Ox (Rothen Ochsen) is the oldest tavern in the historic city of Stein am Rhein. It was founded back in 1446 under the same name. Just look for the hanging sign of the red ox. You can't miss it. It's centrally located in the Town Hall Square with views of other colorfully painted buildings. The frescoes of these historical buildings on this side of town are absolutely stunning. The pictures don't truly reflect the full beauty of it all.
This restaurant was highly recommended to us. I can totally see why. We were very fortunate to find an empty table for lunch. The outdoor terrace is very popular considering the beautiful scenery around us. The menu has a mix of Swiss German and Italian menu items, as well as an extensive wine list. Yes, it's also a wine tavern (Weinstube).
I looked around and noticed that just about everyone was enjoying the St. Galler Gourmet Sausage. It was an easy decision for me. It was served with a seasonal salad and brown bread. That salad was absolutely delicious! I need to find a recipe for this salad & dressing. I could eat this everyday. The sausage was tasty & juicy. This was exactly the kind of meal I was looking for in a local & traditional specialty. I would order the same thing again. I can see why it's so popular. My husband decided to get the Penne all'Arrabbiata with chicken. He absolutely loved the spiciness of the sauce. He seemed very happy with his choice, and kept commenting on it.
The service was great from beginning to end. I couldn't have asked for a better atmosphere. There were groups of families and couples all around us enjoying their meal. Everyone was taking in the beautiful weather on the terrace, and having a great time. It's another wonderful experience that will stay in our memories forever. Highly...
Read moreVery rude, racist waitress! We stepped into the restaurant and asked for a table of two. There were two empty tables and the place is packed with Caucasians. The waitress told us rudely that they have no tables available and ushered us out the door, in an obvious racist behavior. She could have explained that the tables were reserved or whatever, but she just said no no, out out. Very unfriendly despite the restaurant being located in a tourist town.
Update: Restaurant said there was an event in the restaurant and there was a sign at the door. I took a photo of the front of the restaurant just after your server chased us out of the restaurant, it clearly shows there was NO SIGN whatsoever. That is merely an excuse. Even if you do have a party, you cannot expect all guests to read German, especially when you are located in a tourist town. And you donât have to be so rude to guests who unknowingly stepped into your restaurant. This is obviously a racist behavior. You donât even bother to apologize even in your explanation. What a horrid example of Swiss...
Read moreMy wife and I had the pleasure of dining at Weinstube zum Rothen Ochsen after a long walk in this beautiful town of Stein am Rhine, and I must say, it was an exceptional experience from start to finish. I ordered the beef entrecĂ´te, and it was cooked to perfectionâjuicy, tender, and bursting with flavor. Every bite was a delight. The beer selection was top-notch, pairing perfectly with the meal and enhancing the overall dining experience.
The service was impeccable. The staff were attentive, very friendly, and made us feel truly welcomed without being intrusive. It's clear they take pride in ensuring every guest has a great time.
The atmosphere was warm and inviting, with just the right balance of lively energy and cozy comfort. Whether you're looking for a place to relax or celebrate a special occasion, Weinstube zum Rothen Ochsen hits the mark.
I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for top-tier food, great drinks, excellent service, and a wonderful ambiance. Five stars...
