Stein am Rhein Altstadt @ Switzerland 🏘️🇨🇭 📍 Stein am Rhein, Switzerland

Stein am Rhein Altstadt is one of Switzerland’s most picturesque old towns, known for its beautifully preserved medieval architecture and vividly painted façades. The narrow cobblestone streets are lined with historic buildings, charming cafés, and boutique shops, each corner offering a postcard-worthy view.

We visited on a cloudy day after rain—the streets were still damp, and the colors of the murals appeared less vivid under the grey sky. Still, it was a very pleasant walk, with the cooler air and quieter atmosphere making it relaxing to explore this riverside town.

🧭 Tip: Come in the early morning or late afternoon to enjoy the streets with fewer crowds. Don’t miss the riverfront for scenic views...

This little town is a jewel. Unfortunately, most people just drive on by and miss what would otherwise be a memorable visit. The town is bookended by two towers with arches and within it are stores, restaurants, coffee-shops and other places serving delectable food. It is right on the river and at one end of the town is the Abbey of St George. Most people might walk past it think that it is a fusty building with moth-eaten furnishings. Nothing could be further than that. It is filled with things of historic and religious interest. During the reformation most other abbeys and churches in the area were ransacked but this one was left alone. It is said that Zwingli (the famous Swiss Reformer from the city of Zurich) was here on...

When you cross the bridge over the Rhine, and walk along the main pedestrian street of the old city of Stein am Rhein, there is a magical feeling, as in "Alice in Wonderland". The whole site is spectacular in its beauty, with picturesque buildings that are hundreds of years old and it seems as if the time has not touched them. An amazingly beautiful place, adorned with restaurants, cafes, local shops, and infinite beauty. Take your time, walk along the main street, enter the side streets, sit in one of the cafes, and enjoy the breathtaking beauty and magical atmosphere. A rare and unique place, and a must-see site for anyone who travels...

I found another absolute favorite city in Europe to add to my list along with Riquewihr and Bruges. It's more than a town. It's an experience; a walk into the past. Many nice food options and outstanding vistas and architecture. I love this place. TIME to allow: 2 hours will allow you to walk the whole town and grab a bite to eat. 3 or 4 would be better or overnight. Food recommendations, (budget friendly). Amazing Currywurst and Burgers at Imbiss & Take Away zum Tiergarten. Coffee and cake, (Dirty Chai, hot chocolate and Carrot Cake) at Uferlos.
