I first heard of onion ice cream when I saw my Taiwanese friend sharing on her social media.
Initially, I thought it was a gimmick until last month when we visited Kending.
Located in 恆春老街Hengchun Old Street, 歐戀冰品 is opened by 鄭老闆 (Mr. Zheng).
Onion ice cream is an unique creation of him as he wanted his daughters to enjoy healthy ice-cream without non-natural preservatives and ingredients. It took him one year to develop this unique flavor and his creation have even been published into their school textbook.
You can taste onion bits and the sweetness in the ice-cream but no pungent, spicy taste which is amazing. He have now curated several other flavors using onion ice cream as the base so I will recommend to at least try two flavors.
Beside onion ice cream, 歐戀冰品 also sell 綠豆蒜 (Sweet Mung Bean Soup) which is similiar to our Tau Suan in Singapore. What sets it apart from Tau Suan is that 綠豆蒜 is available in both hot and cold version.
歐戀冰品 is a small family business and I am inspired by owner - 鄭老闆's passion for his business. He patiently spend time to share his brand story, creation, products and etc to each customer who visit his store and you can really sense his appreciation.
Please visit and try out this unique ice cream whenever you visit Kending.
PS: Additional info, onion and mung bean are two speciality product of Hengchun hence it is common to see many stores selling mung bean...
Read moreA very special ice cream stall. They offer onion ice cream. This onion ice creams come in 4 flavours: wild mulberry, strawberry, passion fruit and cookies & cream. The owner gotten this idea to add in fried onion because his 2.5Y daughter suggested it saying onion is sweet so why it can't be added into ice cream. When you eat the onion ice cream you won't feel the oily onion or the strong onion taste as the owner mix that with 6 fruits hence the onion base is a lightly flavoured onion ice cream that enhances the other flavours. The toppings for this is very good as it balances the texture & flavour. They also sell a traditional dessert here which is Mung Bean with White Noodle like jelly & black balls; this is bland (do remember Taiwan dessert are all less sweet); for better flavour, wait for the ice to melt then stir from the bottom or request to be sweater but no matter what remember the taste is light. Locals like this dessert though. The owner was very kind & patient to explain the ice cream and...
Read moreSomething very unique. The ice cream does indeed have a slight hint of onion, but in a very neutral and non-off putting way. There are also little onion pieces which are almost like fruit - juicy and crunchy. We ordered the dine-in two scoops bowl, presentation was lovely with toppings like fresh fruit and crispy croutons. There were six flavours in total to choose from all with some onion mixed in. The boss was very nice and introduced the story behind ice cream and even gave us an extra scoop so we could try an additional flavour. Highly...
