While I think it is a bit overhyped here and these are not the best baozi that I’ve ever had, they are good! They are clean and they are consistent!
This market gets a lot of social media attention and this particular stall has a lot of Michelin-hype. They are good, I don’t want to detract from that, but I went around 20 minutes out of my way expecting phenomenal baozi and it was just normal, good baozi in my opinion.
I got two. I had one there and took the other home. It was VERY hot when I got it fresh off the line so I didn’t fully enjoy the first. The second was better when it cooled down a bit! Could use some chili sauce as a side though.
All in all, worth the stop if you’re in the neighborhood. But Michelin is all about going out of your way for something (that’s why it’s an award from a tire-company..) and I don’t particularly think this is worth going too far out of your way. There's a stall not far from Z6 exit of taipei main station that serves better hujiao bing(black pepper buns). Anyone reading this and has the time, should really go and try the one near taipei main station. It's a corner lot. With red pillars and newspaper clippings on the pillars. Same price at NTD 55
The ones I tried here... disappointed cos they weren't as crispy outside, the insides were too soft and soggy and the meat was so-so, not that juicy or tasty.
A pity cos so many blogs mention that they were good.
The queues are probably cos of the attention and the blogs that rave about it, so maybe they used to be good? I only know that I tried and I'm definitely not...
Read moreTHE pepper bun stall is a well oiled machine. Came on a Sunday night and waited less than a minute. They have a well organized line/ordering system to minimize chaos. The pepper bun is worth the hype for sure, just make sure you don't burn your entire mouth by taking too big of a bite too quickly cause then you won't be able to enjoy it as much. You get it in your hand straight out of the oven, so go ahead and wander around and let it cool for a few minutes before you bite into it. The crust is soft, flaky, and the filling is so juicy it'd be running down your hand if they didn't give you a little paper pouch with which to eat it. The pepperiness is noticeable but not overwhelming. You'll want to eat about three more once...
