八不食堂 — Restaurant in Tainan

This is my favorite drinking spot in the whole country, and I've been about 10 times over five or so years. The quaint, old timey atmosphere comes off as cool, rather than cheesy, and many "rooms" are somewhat private and intimate. I imagine it would be a great place for gangsters to discuss a heist. Notably, the food is excellent. The best item is the chicken breast bone. I don't know any other place that even sells this part of the chicken....but it's one of the best parts of the bird! I will say, though, that it pays to be a regular customer; the price of your meal and beer seems to be based on how much they like you. If you go with a local regular (like the friend with whom I always go) you can drink and eat non-stop for 5-6 hours for 500NT per person. There's no way that's the regular price since we routinely order 20-30 meat plates (i.e., the entire menu) and drink 20-30 bottles of beer between three people (and the total is usually 1200-1500NT). The beer alone should be 1500NT, I'd think?! They also have excellent oden (guan gond zhu) for when it's colder. Can't wait to go...

Tainan is a very special place with great food, art, and culture. Had the highlight of my stay here with a wonderful experience of fresh cooked food and warm friendly atmosphere. The grilled chicken wings and mackerel are amazing! 十一哥 has done an excellent job since acquiring the restaurant only 4 months...

Incredible setting ruined by badly re-heated (i.e. not freshly cooked) food and rude staff (when we complained that the food was not hot she blamed the fan!). My advice is to have to a quick drink if you want to see the old building and then leave and eat...
