We visited this humble yet popular beef soup joint on our way back to Taipei and stayed-over in Tainan for a night. The place was busy though it was still quite early when we visited for breakfast. We ordered beef soups, a plate of stir-fried veggies with beef and rice bowls (my one was lu rou fan). The special pork rice lu rou fan was good, but the hero of the meal was the beef soup, with tender Tainan beef and peppery, sweet soup from beef stock 👍⭐. The stir-fried veggies with beef was also good complement for the breakfast meal. We did not know for sure, but there are some mentions on the net that this humble place is included in Michelin Guide's Bib Gourmand list. I think it deserves the recognition.
The owner was kind to us even though we could not speak Mandarin Chinese. He provided English menu with picture for us when we asked for it. Don't forget to ask for the special chilly sauce if you like a bit of spice heat for your meal. The place is not big and gets busy fast. Since this is a casual restaurant, it won't have much ambience to talk. You just come, eat, pay and leave quickly. Prices are reasonable and you can only...
Read moreI've had a few beef soups in Tainan, but this is one of the best you're likely to get. It's featured in the Michelin Guide for a reason because the soup is absolutely packed full of flavour. There is a suggestion to add ginger and sauce but on its own the broth has enough flavour, my suggestion is to try the soup first then add. The restaurant is usually a little far for me but I popped in on the way to the bus station, if you're in Tainan early in the morning it's a perfect location. There are also three sizes of soup, if you're hungry get a big. I got medium for 150 but regretted not getting big as it...
Read moreOrdered takeout back to the hotel as the dining in area was crowded. Bought a small portion of the mixed soup and a small portion of the stir-fried kailan with a free side of rice.
The soup was really very good and definitely deserving of its Michelin bib. Kailan was nice too, but I personally liked the soup more. Was quite full from breakfast and considered not getting the free side of braised pork rice, but so glad I didn't do that. The braised pork rice was really good too, maybe even better than quite a number of stores which specialise...
