The problem with this place is less its food, obviously except the toffee dessert, that reminded me of wallpaper glue, but it's dreadfully incompetent service, some of the worst I have ever seen. It was at Mister Bean level, which almost made me look out for some hidden camera. It possibly couldn’t be true that it was all real! Now, who’s to blame? The waitress, who definitely wasn’t the brightest candle, and didn’t know how to tap a beer, brought it to the wrong table, took half an hour to serve a completely overpriced (homemade) soda water, and asked three times if she could serve the abovementioned desert, before finally doing so after 30 minutes had passed in total? Considering her obvious intellectual limitations, at least she still tried hard. Or is it the person who obviously didn't train her properly or that decided to design menus in Mandarin and Czech, with no English, which considering the number of foreigners potentially interested in European cuisine in Taipei doesn’t make much sense? Well, somehow it matched the staff unable to speak the language of William Shakespeare… I didn’t really care, because I’m fluent in Chinese, though I had to hold the provided table lamp to be able to order! Why make a place so dark that it reminds you of a den of thieves in Prague? By the way: why serve a good beer in glasses with the logo of a completely unrelated brand from another country? On the positive side, the marinated cheese was nice, and the beef goulash with Bohemian dumplings had a simply spectacular taste! The surprisingly good chicken schnitzel came with a fresh and even cooling potato salad, which I guess contained horseradish. I should have stopped ordering there… All in all, as for me gastronomy food and service are an indivisible unit, I can’t recommend Divadlo, unless you have too much time to spend or simply don’t care at all about how quite delicious...
Read more"Divadlo" (in translation "Theatre") is the only Czech restaurant in Taiwan. Despite its location in the capital city Taipei it is inconviently located on Jiaxing St. at least 10min by walk to the nearest metro station (Liuzhangli, or Taipei 101).
The restaurant is well presented outside with modern logo, but when you enter inside the ambience and atmosphere will bring you decades back to poorly lit burgeois theatre-pub style where you barely see your meal and feel little depressed. Ambience is mixed by things that should give Czech feeling but huge projection screen playing strange art videos really degrades that.
The list of available meals and drinks is fairly typical to what you may find in Czech restaurants. From the selection the "Tatarák" (raw beef) needs to be pre-ordered as beef must be fresh.
The presentation of meals is well done, but the taste would mostly fail in the Czech Republic. Probably, they target Taiwanese or Asian in general. Meals taste noticeably sour, or with improper spiciness. Garlic soup is very sour, Goulash sauce and potato salad too. Potato salad is unnaturally mashed which is completely wrong. Dumplings and bread are well done but dumplings for goulash are degraded by red pepper and in wrong variant. Schnitzel is fine.
Drinks are fine for Taiwanese and I may recommend the available beer.
Staff is friendly, speaks English and improves the stay in the restaurant.
Pricing is very high equal to top tourist restaurants in the Czech Republic, but counting the need to acquire proper ingredients and lack of competition it is...
