The Waterfront — Restaurant in Dar es-Salaam

We were able to secure a table for two right next to the water, which was good, both for the view and for better avoiding the smoke from several smokers who dined nearby. The wait staff were friendly enough, but always seemed to be in a hurry, making it difficult to get a satisfactory explanation to questions about the menu and food items.

My dining partner enjoyed the cous-cous vegetable salad but, as noted below, felt that it should have more veggies in it. My baked kingfish serving was very good, tho slightly overcooked (this coming from an Alaskan who eats a fair amount of fish). The serving size was certainly adequate.

So why the one star rating? Well, I ordered a drink consisting of one shot of amarula and one of vodka on the rocks. What came was a drink, with ice, that didn't even have enough for a single shot. It was small by any standard, even Tanzanian, as I could attest after ordering drinks around the country during the course of the last four weeks.

I mentioned this to the woman who had been going around asking diners to fill out surveys on their opinions about the dining experience there. She replied that she would try to make it right and have another drink made. Instead the waiter came and tried to explain that they use the smaller side of a shot measuring cup. And I responded that this should be indicated on the menu, plus my drink was even smaller than what they were saying was poured. While we talked a manager showed up and we basically repeated the same conversation. Yet, knowing that I was dissatisfied and not particularly pleased with how things were being handled, they stll made no effort to have me feel truly heard or to correct what I felt was wrong.

For what I was served it was bland ( grilled fish) and my husband was served lamb chops it was very chewy . The service was okay it’s like they were fearful to speak up to the foreigners about smoking which was ridiculous. They really need to improve so many things . The first thing that needs improvement is structure . If there is a smoking and non smoking area then be strict on that. Allowing foreigners just do whatever they want is ridiculous and I am a foreigner myself. As a non smoker I don’t want to smell smoking while I am eating. I asked if I could be seated in a non smoking area and they said yes . Just to find out there is an exception for foreigners. What was disturbing to see is watching Tanzanians waiting and waiting for their food and then foreigners getting served first. I am not sure who the owner is of the restaurant is but whomever you are this needs to be fixed. As more foreigners like myself visit Dar . This will not be acceptable. The next thing that needs to improve is making sure you have product. If you close at midnight why are you running out of fresh juice? We really enjoyed our food here at the Waterfront at Slipway. This is such a great location. The menu had some great options. The food was very fresh. The pork chops were fantastic. The rice and veggies were also good and the food came at a good price. My friends really enjoyed the jumbo prawns and said they tasted very fresh. There was a bit of a long wait for the food, and the restaurant wasn’t completely full. There were also lots of flies everywhere, which made it tough to eat. Another restaurant gave us rosemary in hot water and it was a great repellent, I highly recommend it. We sprayed our table with our own bug spray, which helped some. The other issue were the crows. Not sure how to get ride of them but one came and actually took food off my friends plate. The birds also took over the couch and high top areas to the point that people had to move as we were leaving. I recommend not sitting in the back on the edges, it might be better sitting at lower tables in the center of the restaurant to get away from birds.
