Nestled on the bustling Banthat Thong Road, Pungdet is a charming café that has garnered a loyal following for its meticulously prepared charcoal-toasted bread. Banthat Thong Road itself has a rich history—originally known as "Phra That Thong" and once a hub for car repair shops, it has since transformed into one of Bangkok's premier culinary destinations. Today, the street is lined with a vibrant array of eateries, attracting food enthusiasts from near and far.
At Pungdet, the focus is clear: delivering perfectly toasted bread with fillings that delight both the sweet and savory palate. Each piece is toasted to order over a charcoal flame, a process that takes just enough time to create a crisp, golden exterior while warming the fillings within. The result? A fragrant and irresistibly soft bite that lingers on the palate.
The Offerings With an impressive selection of 22 fillings, diners are spoiled for choice. Among the highlights are:
Ham and Cheese – A timeless pairing of melted cheese and smoky ham. Butter Sugar – A sweet classic with buttery richness and a delicate sprinkle of sugar. Hokkaido Milk – Smooth, creamy, and delicately sweet, inspired by Japan's famed dairy. Tuna – A savory favorite for seafood lovers. Smoked Salmon – A luxurious option with bold, smoky notes. Prices are refreshingly affordable, ranging from 20 THB for a simple butter sugar toast to 60 THB for premium fillings like smoked salmon.
A Culinary Experience During my visit, I opted for the Hokkaido Milk and Thai Tea fillings. The bread, served fresh from the grill, boasted a wonderfully crisp crust and a pillowy-soft interior. The Hokkaido Milk filling was divine—creamy, light, and delicately sweet, a perfect complement to the toasted bread. The Thai Tea filling, though flavorful, leaned on the sweeter side and might be an acquired taste for some.
For those seeking a savory indulgence, the Ham and Cheese filling appears to be a crowd favorite, and it’s certainly on my list for my next visit.
Ambiance The café features a cozy, air-conditioned space next door, complete with tables and chairs for diners who prefer to savor their toast on-site. Fresh water and tissues are thoughtfully provided, making for a comfortable dining experience. While the buns are delightful at any time, they’re best enjoyed fresh off the grill when the textures and aromas are at their peak.
Verdict Pungdet is a must-visit for anyone exploring Banthat Thong Road. Its combination of expertly toasted bread, a wide variety of fillings, and unbeatable value makes it a standout destination in Bangkok's thriving food scene. Whether you're looking for a quick snack or a leisurely treat, Pungdet delivers with charm and...
Read moreCame here for my lil sweet treat after dining at Chula 50 and on my way back to Siam Centre 🤭
It was recommended to me multiple times from my For You Page as a popular/ viral charcoal toast place, and I was so so glad that there wasn’t a line when I arrived (it was also bordering on drizzling/raining and before the huge dinner rush time).
The staff was incredibly kind and helped me decide on the flavors (cue me: indecisive and overwhelmed by the options available 😂), and their interior was nice and clean as well (I was able to use their washroom while I was waiting).
Now, onto the toast itself. Listen, I’m a HUGE sweet tooth, like, I can devour a full chocolate cake to myself if I really want to in one sitting (neither here nor there don’t judge me 🫣🥴), but holy. Moly. The condensed milk flavor one I almost couldn’t finish because of how sweet it was. That’s just a personal preference though, as the other two I got (Ovaltine Crunchy/ Thai Milk Tea) were fantastic.
I love they you can see them grill the bread right in front of you and how fluffy they are when you bite into them. My favorite was definitely the Ovaltine Crunchy one with the nutty flavor combing with the slightly charcoal taste to create an amazing infusion of texture and taste in your mouth 👄 The best way to describe it is literally eating a pillowy Ferrero Rocher 🤤
I want to come back to try...
Read moreI tried Pungdet’s Bread with Nutella, and it was a simple yet indulgent treat! The bread itself was incredibly soft and fluffy, with a light texture that made every bite enjoyable. It had the perfect balance of chewiness and airiness, making it an ideal base for the rich filling.
The Nutella filling was generous and oozed out beautifully with every bite, giving that signature chocolate-hazelnut flavor that we all love. It was smooth, creamy, and not overly sweet, complementing the softness of the bread perfectly. The slight warmth of the bread made the Nutella even more melty and satisfying.
While it’s a straightforward snack, the quality of the bread and the richness of the filling set it apart. It’s the perfect comfort food—simple, nostalgic, and delicious. Whether you’re grabbing a quick bite or satisfying a sweet craving, Pungdet’s Bread with Nutella is definitely worth trying. Highly recommended for...
