A Hidden Gem with Heartfelt Hospitality!

This is the first review I’ve ever written on Google, and this restaurant truly deserves it.

We visited on the first day of Chinese New Year, expecting the place to be packed given the occasion—only to find that we were the only guests during dinner.

The food is as authentic as it gets when it comes to traditional southern Chinese cuisine (傳統老式潮汕菜). Heng Shark’s Fin has been my parents’ go-to spot since before I was born—over 30 years ago—so in a way, I grew up eating their food.

But beyond the authenticity of the dishes, what truly stood out was the hospitality and warmth of the owner, an incredibly charming 83-year-old grandmother. She welcomed us with kindness, gifting my partner and me a bag of oranges and retro candies—an old tradition where elders share blessings with the younger generation during Chinese New Year. She even handed each of us a red envelope, a gesture that left us both touched and nostalgic.

As we chatted, she mentioned that we were the first “Chinese-blooded” customers of the day. With a bittersweet smile, she shared her concern that she might not be able to give out all the red envelopes she had prepared, as none of her regular customers had come this year. “People were still coming in last year,” she said. “But for some reason, they’re not anymore. Maybe the younger generation is just too busy to bring their parents and grandparents out these days.”

Hearing this, I was left with a mix of emotions—joy from the heartfelt experience, sadness for the aging owner, and concern for places like this that seem to be fading in favor of trendier, more convenient spots.

Heng Shark’s Fin is more than just a restaurant; it’s a place filled with history, tradition, and irreplaceable warmth. I only hope that more people will take the time to appreciate these gems before...

Favorites from our childhood. Because of the new construction it is now much harder to get to. Best to be drop off but if you bring your car the parking lot is across the street. The place is old and quite rundown. The food is as good as I remember. Brings back a lot...

I'm no stranger to shark's fin soup, and I can say that this humble shop serves really high-quality ones. My friend and I ordered goose feet noodle as well, and we felt so satisfied with that meal. Shoutout to the owner (a grandma) for hosting us so well....

The prawns are really huge and fresh. Super yummy! One of the nicest Chinese-Thai restaurant we went. Must order the shark fin as well. Crab meat fried rice was a little bland, the rest is all good.
