Dr Frogs Bar & Grill — Where the Edge of the Cliff Meets the Edge of Sanity
There were three of us, weary and hungry — half-delirious, godless freaks dragging our sunburned carcasses through the thick Thai night, hunting something real — something hot, greasy, and honest to God open.
We found it perched on the edge of the earth like a madman’s lighthouse: Dr Frogs, some unholy fusion of bar, grill, and chapel to the gods of good food and better decisions made far too late.
It was dark — not metaphorically, but primally dark, the kind of inky, humid black that eats headlights and whispers about the sea below. The view? Stunning if we could’ve seen it. A wall of night where the world just stopped, like staring out the window of a spaceship into the abyss. We sat at the cliff’s edge, sipping something cold, listening to the jungle breathe and the bar lights buzz like distant stars.
The place should have been closed. Lights low, chairs stacked. And yet — the owners (we assumed), lounging at the bar like well-dressed pirates, cracked smiles like old dogs recognizing their kind. No suspicion, no hesitation — just open arms and cold drinks, like they’d been waiting for us. You don’t find that anymore. That’s dinosaur behavior, extinct in the age of apps and chain restaurants.
And the chef — this lunatic hero, still in the kitchen, no reason to be alive at that hour, let alone willing to cook. But he did. He did. Like a warlock conjuring pad Thai in the temple of doom, he fed us without complaint, possibly even with joy. Or maybe it was madness. We’ll never know.
The food? Delicious. Four stars. Because five is a lie. Nobody gets a five. Five is a hallucination, a trick of the light. Four is where the real magic happens — where taste meets truth and bites back.
Service? Five, and it should go higher. Because five on a service scale where the average is a 2.5 for remembering your water and not spitting in your burger, is an act of defiance. Dr Frogs serves with the energy of a place that remembers why we eat together. The kind of joint that makes you believe humanity isn’t entirely doomed.
Atmosphere? Also a five. Even blind at night, you could feel the ocean yawning beneath you, and the bar glowing like some kind of fever dream. This wasn’t ambiance — it was alchemy.
We left full, grinning, mildly sun-stroked, and spiritually realigned.
Final Score: 4.5 stars. Docked half a point because perfection is reserved for gods and ghosts. But this? This was damn close — a shot of adrenaline straight into the tired heart of the...

The patio seating overlooking the sea, the sunset (should you get there in time) and the coast line of the beautiful city or koh Samui just hints towards what you are about to witness as you dine here.
The service, hospitality and warmth of those serving you is felt as they are attentive and yet also allow you the privacy of the company you may have. There is no rushing, allowing you to soak in the surroundings as you go about your order.
It's a place where you would want to go with someone who warms your heart, as you would find even the silent clink of your glasses speak a thousand words. :)
We loved their wine list so much that we ended up ordering two bottles of Rosé which was perfect for the setting that was presented.
Granted we did not go past their appetizers, which basically were a portion of Smoked Salmon Bruschetta which was so beautifully balanced with the cream cheese, capers and shallots assembled over perfectly toasted bread followed by Crab cakes which were not only gorgeously presented, but the taste and size of each Crab cake ensured that you were being served from a kitchen which was managed by a true Chef.
The sweetness of the crab meat oozed out with every bite and it wasn't any dainty portion that many high end restaurants would be accused of serving up.
With my experience, I can only go to say that if the starters gave such an explosion of flavours, I can't wait to get back there for my next run through their menu!
In the end, all I can say is that if you are looking for a place which serves your taste buds as well as your soul, don't miss out on this beautiful spot for a meal or even a drink. I promise you shall leave with a memory.
I honestly had one of the best, if not best, evenings of my life. (Of course.... the company that you dine with also matters..... And mine was amazing!)
Thank you to all there at Dr Frog for being part of creating this for me! Look forward to...
Read moreThe one star is for the incredible view. We went for breakfast, staff got both our drinks and food order wrong. You have to almost jump on the table to get a waiter (and it wasn't busy at all). I don't even know where to start with how bad the meal was. My husband ordered the Mexican muffin, the menu states on a muffin with guacamole. He was served bruschetta! It was not on a muffin and no avocado at all, just bread tomato onion and egg 🤔. Then i ordered the Dr Frogs breakfast, which states asparagus with poached eggs, feta olives and rocket (sounds yummy right) .... NO!! My meal was served like a platter, with each item separately on the plate, made no sense at all and no asparagus to be seen, the bread was stone cold and hard served with frozen butter and stale croissants. We both ordered a side of bacon, only 1 came out which was 2 very small pieces that were cold. Our plates were the only part of our breakfast that was served hot. The hostess could obviously tell we were not satisfied as she came and asked how our meals were. My husband said good (being polite he really shouldn't have) and i just said nothing, she then stood there awkwardly and said if we want she can send the chef out to talk to us in a very passive aggressive tone, which made me so uncomfortable. Then when we finished we sat there for 15 minutes with no staff attending to our table at all we got sick of waiting so got up and walked inside to ask for our bill which was so expensive $1100!!! for an awful meal. What a shame as with that view the potential is there. We...
