Mr. Kai Kitchen — Restaurant in Surat Thani Province

We walked from our hotel to Mr. Kai Kitchen, the street sidewalk is not like the typical tourist situation, no frills no neon light, keep following Google Map and u will find a small cafe style Air Conditioned restaurant. U can also see Mr. Kai cooking on the exterior side of the restaurant, when u enter the restaurant you will be greeted by Mrs. Kai, smiley, friendly and humble. This place is own and run by husband and wife, the place is very clean, very comfortable, all the simple, basic necessities all checked! The food was amazing, local authentic taste, piping hot, and well balanced on the pallet. Since this is a very small restaurant, there’s only about 8 tables. No reservation needed but if u are a big group, u shld call ahead. We went a bit greedy with our food options, as we were hungry and excited. The price of every dish is just a small fraction of hotels menu, but the flavor/dishes are the big fraction of the food memories we got! A whole fish cooked however u like, at 300 Baht is amazing! Still on our 4 week food safari of Koh Samui. We came here based on the reviews, and had the deep fried sea bass with tamarind sauce, crab fried rice and a pomelo salad.

The sea bass was perfectly cooked, generous, still juicy and good flesh. Easily 9/10.

The crab fried rice was deliciously understated (yes, unusual for Thai food), and also 9/10.

The pomelo salad needs some work. Ours was very sour and unbalanced. It needed more fish sauce and palm sugar.

Maybe we drew the short straw, I see others have enjoyed it.

The venue is clean, A/C inside if you don't want to fight with the insects and heat ourside. Portions are generous and the prices are good.

Staff are friendly and helpful, and remembered us when we returned for more of the delicious sea bass and Penang curry.

Overall, very good indeed.

And we came back nine months later and had the deep fried sea bass in tamarind sauce again. It is still superb. The fish was crispy on the outside and lovely and juicy inside. ...
