Came here on a recommendation from a local friend who really knows his local Thai food.
We started with pomelo salad, which was delicious. It had green mango and green apple strips, crispy onion and crispy lemongrass, a bbq prawn topper, and it was really fresh, and very interesting. It came on a betel leaf base (and some of those flavours also came through), and they had separated some of the segments into individual sacs. It was medium spicy and had great mouth feel. Just the right amount of heat. Certainly one of the best pomelo salads we've had over the years (and we've had quite a few!).
We then ordered two stunning dishes Khao Soi Gai and Massaman beef.
This was easily the richest massaman we've ever had, quite thick. Wall to wall layered spices. It has good heat, perfect cook on the beef, and just wow. If you like massaman, get here. Easy 10/10. If there is a constructive criticism, they could actually dial back the spice by 10%. Not the heat, the spice.
The Khao Soi Gai was also superb. Deliciously and intensely rich, chicken leg cook is perfect, noodles cooked exactly right. Easy 10/10, if not higher.
Just stunning food. Wow. We've got a few more days in Bophut and we'll be...
Read moreGreat Service and Vegan-Friendly Option in Bophut! We had a pleasant dining experience at The Spices Restaurant in Bophut. I'd give it 4 stars, primarily due to the excellent service and their willingness to accommodate dietary needs. The service was truly great. As a vegan, I really appreciated how helpful the staff were in guiding me through the menu, suggesting dishes, and making necessary modifications like removing fish sauce. This made ordering much easier and more comfortable. The portions were also quite generous, which was a plus. The food itself was nice – good, solid Thai cuisine, though perhaps not the absolute best we've had in Thailand. It was definitely enjoyable, though!
The best and nice surprise was a black sesame ginger dessert. It had a unique flavor, and we enjoyed it immensely. As expected for a restaurant, prices are significantly higher than what you'd pay for street food, so be prepared for that. However, considering the good service and comfortable setting, it felt like a fair trade-off. Overall, if you're looking for a nice sit-down Thai meal in Bophut, especially if you have dietary restrictions, The Spices Restaurant is a very...
Read moreService was excellent. The food was solid. We'd read the reviews about the food being hot here and we don't mind a little bit of spice but we're not able for big heat. We ordered most dishes with the instruction 'not very spicy, just a little bit'.
Dishes: Papaya salad: Fresh and tasty but definitely a bit of a kick to it. Would order again though. Massaman lamb: This was okay but it was arguably too spicy to even be able to really taste/appreciate it Red sticky chicken curry (inc fried egg and rice): This was on the specials board so might not be available all the time but this was very tasty
Ordered a portion rice to go with the massaman. Ordered some soft drinks to put out the fires in our mouths!
We had dessert too. Mango sticky rice was good. The roti pancake with mango was okay but not something I'd have again.
Bill came to about 1,400 including a tip.
Overall solid but I've been to better on the island. Check out my other reviews for my 5 star...
