Really, the place to see in Istanbul. There is culture, history, and landmarks, but for solid nightlife, entertainment, and food, few places match Taxim and Istiklal.

Be prepared for a ton of people: this place is always packed. Roasted walnuts, chicken pilaf, simit (think bagel with sesame seeds), and medya (mussels) are served in the streets, and bars and restaurants are everywhere.

There is also a historical trolley that is very cheap to ride, though it doesn't really go anywhere. Getting here is easy: there are two metro stations on either end of the street, and frequent bus stops.
