New Shanghai — Restaurant in Abu Dhabi

The food at New Shanghai is pretty good. I had the chicken fried rice, Shanghai chicken noodles, General Tso's chicken and the crispy chicken wonton. The crispy chicken wonton were crispy on the outside and steaming hot and scrumptious on the inside. The fried rice, noodles and General Tso's chicken were also delicious and portions were big enough for 2 people. I loved the food however the service needs improvement. The server went around giving fortune cookies to everyone at each table however did not inform us that we would be charged for it. I didn't find out until I received the bill to see the fortune cookies added on the bill for each person she handed it to at our table. Also I noticed another server handing out red envelopes to other diners at the end of their meals but I was never given one. I don't know what was in them or how they decided who should receive one but noticed my table was the only one to not receive it. Lastly, although I ordered chicken fried rice, they brought shrimp fried rice to my table and I had to wait even longer for the General Tso's chicken. I came to New Shanghai because the name itself attracted me – I love Thailand and Asian flavors, so I wanted to give it a try.

I started with the rock shrimp appetizer and the cucumber salad – both were excellent and full of flavor.

There was a small incident with our main course, the shrimp fried rice, which came out saltier than usual. But here is where I must highlight the wonderful service: Rose, our waiter, handled it in the most professional and friendly way. She listened carefully, immediately took action, asked the chef to re-taste, and replaced the dish without hesitation. On top of that, she even offered us a complimentary gesture. Honestly, she went above and beyond what anyone would expect.

The cool, green atmosphere that greets you at the entrance is a welcome surprise, offering a refreshing escape from the burning heat outside. ​The friendly and helpful waiters made the experience just as enjoyable as before. The food was, once again, a delight—pleasant to taste, aromatic, and perfectly satiating. It's rare to find a place that maintains such a high standard, but this restaurant proves it's possible.
