There is a lot of word-of-mouth done for Pak Liyari, somehow they've capitalized on their food and people are talking about them as a hidden gem. Though I dread going to that side of the town because of lack of parking and lot of traffic, I went on a public holiday. And it was a great decision because I didn't get any traffic. But even Google Maps gave my many detours before landing me at this place. It's inside a small lane, hence don't blame Google. Reach that neighborhood, park the car and walk. About the food, I only tried Biryani as that is what I heard was best here. The way they served biryani didn't look appetizing at all. The heap of white rice that concealed the meat was served on a small plate, which was kept inside a big bowl. So I took out that quarter plate put of that bowl, and slid the rice onto that bowl. That's when I saw the real deal. There was a lot of meat and curry. As I mixed the rice with curry, that's when the colors came out - the golden brown color of a rich curry. Though this looked more of a curry-rice than Biryani, but after the initial bites, I was drawn in. The biryani was quite spicy owing to a lot of peppercorns thrown in, but tasted really good and oozing of right flavors. This is one of those rare spiced/spicy Biryani you'd find in Dubai, which usually has subtle Biryanis everywhere. The price are so low that a coffee at Starbucks would cost you more than a meal here! The decor is very basic, the place is rundown, the neighborhood isn't too inviting, maybe one wouldn't want to take family along. Perhaps best...
Read moreWhile in Dubai, a good biryani was high on my list of items I wanted to try. After considerable research, Pak Liyari seemed to continually feature on lists of the city's best biryani, and so my brother and I headed towards Bur Dubai on an exceptionally rainy day in Dubai. Unfortunately, when we arrived just past 9pm we were informed the restaurant had completely sold out of biryani, and so we vowed to return the following day.
Arriving close to 4pm on our second try the restaurant was packed, with a constant flow of diners coming in and out. We took a seat on the ground floor and after some deliberation with our server, opted for a lamb biryani with half masala, a green chicken curry and lamb karahi. We weren’t expecting to pay an exorbitant amount but were still surprised with the extremely low cost of the restaurant, with our total well under 60 dhs.
The dishes arrived simultaneously, with the biryani crammed on a smaller plate for us to unload on a larger serving bowl. We also ordered a naan to accompany the curries - to our dismay - the bread was lukewarm rather than piping hot. Having chosen Pak Liyari for its biryani we decided to try it first, it was exceptional, full of delicate flavours and pull apart lamb. The assortment of spices made for a delicious medley but somehow were still individual standouts, and my brother and I did not hesitate to proclaim it as the best biryani we’ve ever had.
Following the quality of the biryani it was hard for any dish to compare, and the chicken curry and lamb karahi fell short. The flavours were solid but the dishes became monotonous after a few bites especially with the naan.
Overall, when in Dubai again I would not hesitate to return to Pak Liyari for their...
