What an enormous disappointment all round. We had intended to eat at the French patisserie a couple of doors down (always a pleasure, amazing food and very reasonable) but it was closed between Christmas and new year. My daughter chose Teddys as an alternative. It was busy which seemed a positive but subsequently realised a lot of these people were maybe deluded loyal locals. Firstly, the floor around our table was filthy, not a good start. The menu is basic but I get it’s a tea room so that’s not my criticism here. The waitress was in such a rush to take our order, she barely gave us time to speak - we both noticed it. My daughter then pointed out that the younger waitress scratched her head and served glasses of drinks with her fingers in them - yuk! We ordered toasted sandwiches with chips, a flat white and a hot chocolate. When it arrived it, it looked sad to say the least. An extremely small, dry looking sandwich with a few bits of salad thrown on the plate. The filling in mine was virtually nonexistent and my daughter said the flavour of the cheddar wasn’t nice at all. My coffee was overly bitter to the point of being unpleasant and the only good thing was the hot chocolate. When I paid the bill at the counter I was shocked that it came to £28.35, probably the worst value lunch I have ever eaten. I queried it but it was correct. Never to be repeated and when next visiting Shoreham, I will definitely check that either the French patisserie or River Cafe & Bistro are open (both great food and service and imo very good value for money). AVOID this cafe unless you want simple cake and tea - although for me it’s a big no...
Read moreTeddy's is lovely. The menu is good, the prices are fair and the staff are always amazing. The rest of this review is going to be moaning about the vegetarian breakfast, so feel free to skip.
I think we're past the time when vegetarian breakfasts were a compromise - a regular breakfast with the meat removed and more mushrooms added in. Many places now serve great vegetarian and vegan breakfasts that are nourishing, filling and very tasty, and compete with meat breakfasts on their own terms. Not so much at Teddy's. The good parts are the toast (done to perfection), the tomatoes (melt in the mouth), eggs (nicely poached) and avocado (perfectly ripe). The mushrooms, however, were well-cooked but smelled "farmy". Have they just been boiled, unseasoned? My main moan is with the sausages. They taste like someone has blended up the leftover potatoes, carrots and broccoli from a Sunday roast and deep fried them. But mostly the potatoes. This is a real shame as they could be the star of the show, complemented by all the other items already mentioned. But instead, it feels like you're filling yourself up with empty carbs and starch. Add to this the fact that you get two large hash browns (nice ones, as it happens), then your really feel like you're still in the bad old days of giving vegetarians loads of "sides" and hoping they'll be satisfied. I really hope the chef takes notice and tries an alternative. Quorn sausages would be good, or seitan, or tofu... There's a really good chance to make this breakfast a standout. Currently, it is...
Read moreI went here today with my friend. I ordered a slice of cake and my friend a lemon/blueberry scone. The cake was very generous but the sponge was over cooked on the outside and a bit dry. My friend insisted on paying so I took her card in to pay. I told the lady on the till ( who had served us) that the cake was dry. She said I should have told her as she would have changed it. I said that my friend had lost her mother just last week, travelled 200 miles to see me, was very weepy, that she was paying the bill and I thought it would be inappropriate to have gone in search of staff or made a fuss etc. She repeated she would have changed it. I explained again why I hadn’t said anything earlier, friend crying and would have been upset if I had said it wasn’t nice as her treat ...she left it at that. I think it would have been a nice gesture for her to have maybe knocked friend’s coffee or my cuppa off the bill. Like the cake, it was...
