Came here for the first time Saturday - we were shown to a dirty table but the server cleaned it. All of the chairs were either very worn and/or had stains on them.
We noticed the glasses weren't clean; we don't like to cause a fuss & so wiped them over with napkins.
All of the menus were stained and/or sticky.
We ordered the vegan burger & mushroom & ale pie, but they had run out of the vegan burger, so instead I chose scampi & chips. Despite the tables only being approximately 2/3 full, it took 40 minutes for our food to arrive. The food was piping hot & we both enjoyed it. A server did also check that everything was ok with the meal too.
We ordered dessert - a crumble & Millionaire's Cheesecake. The server brought over my father’s crumble, placed it on the table and THEN decides to inform us that they don't have any Millionaire's Cheesecake! I did express that we should have been informed of this before & now we would be having desserts separately as I now had to wait for another dessert to be prepared. I was asked which dessert I'd like instead & so I chose 'The Ultimate Big Candymania' which I noticed says 'serves 2' so when the server asked 'the big one or the small one', I said small assuming that would be serving one. I wasn't looking to get a bigger dessert to one we had paid for - I chose that one as that also had cookie dough in it as that's my favourite dessert. This meal was a birthday meal for me & I had looked at a few venues and their menus prior but chose The Martlets mainly because of the cookie dough desserts being my favourite!
When my dessert arrived it initially looked fine, but upon eating some I realised there was no cookie dough in it. By this point we were fed up, so I didn't say anything as we didn't want to wait again for the correct dessert. When we saw a server I did say 'although we weren't actually told this, I assume you are also out of cookie dough?' We bluntly received a response of 'we don't do cookie dough'; I said to him 'why is it on the menu then'? He said 'I've worked here for 2 months & I've never seen cookie dough. It must be in the ice-cream'. I confirmed it wasn't - there was no cookie dough in the ice-cream I had. It very clearly says on the menu 'cookie dough pieces' and 'chocolate cookie dough. He said I'd been given a 'build your own dessert', which isn't even on the menu! I asked why I had been given that, when that's not what I asked for. Upon further inspection, there is a 'build your own' dessert - on the children's menu! I asked why I'd been given a children's dessert & he couldn't explain & said 'I can't do anything as you've eaten it now'! I was quite shocked; I hadn't eaten it all, but as I assumed I had been given the correct dessert, why wouldn't I eat it? It was only once eating it I found there was no cookie dough - how was I to know beforehand there was an ingredient missing? He offered a 40p refund & said 'that's all I can do' & shrugged! We stated that wasn't acceptable; we had paid £5.49 for a dessert to be given a children's one at £2.29 - a difference of £3.20. He reluctantly agreed to a refund of £3.20 & disappeared. Not once did he apologise for the convenience or the hassle; each response we had was met with a 'I don't really care' attitude.
After 10-15 minutes of waiting, we went to go to the bar to see no sign of the server we were dealing with. He had passed it onto the Manager, Kevin. He had the £3.20 refund but also asked us what happened & he kindly offered a full refund which we accepted. I said it was my birthday & it put a dampener on the meal. Kevin apologised a couple of times which I thanked him for - we said the server had not done this. We mentioned the cookie dough issue to Kevin who said they used to make cookie dough but no longer did. Clearly the menu needs updating as it is actually false advertising.
We weren't expecting anything extravagant; however, you expect cleanliness & much better customer.
Although Kevin was pleasant, apologised & kindly gave a refund, we won't...
Read moreI went here for a nice meal out with my partner and we ordered our food and drinks and when we had ordered our food it was an offer that day that If you ordered from a certain part of the menu you'd get a free starter or desserts. I didn't know about the offer until I went up to order the food and so I picked out the 2 desserts that me and my partner had wanted and she placed the order. I also asked for hard yolk on my egg as I'm pregnant and I obviously can't eat runny yolk, she wrote that in the message and I went and waited for my food. Food arrived and I had a runny yolk, now I didn't make a thing of it and just ate around the yolk, it not being the end of the world. So after we had finished our food the waitor came and took our plates and asked if we had ordered dessert, I said yea we have and he said well I didn't see anything on the order let me go and check that for you. I was confused by this so I looked at the reciept and it wasn't on there. The man went off and assuming he had checked the order and it was on their so he was waiting for it to be prepared as he didn't come over and tell us it wasn't on their, we waiting for 20 minutes and I then said I'll wait 5 more minutes and then go and ask assuming the chefs may have been busy. Then a man came over, assuming he's the manager, asked us how old we were, so I told him me and my partner were 16, he then said we can't be here it's past the time we're aloud here, if I hadn't been waiting for dessert I would have left. So I then told him we were waiting for dessert, and he said we weren't aloud in the bar bit and that we had moved from the restaurant to the bar area, which is false as we had eaten and sat in the bar area the whole time, he continued to rant on about how we weren't aloud. Okay so why didn't any of your workers tell us to move? He then went to check the order and came back and said there was no desserts, so he was implying that I was lying, so I explained and he kept raising his voice at me and repeating himself and I was explaining what had happened, he was very rude and didn't listen to me what so ever, I was appalled by the way he spoke and treated me. I won't be...

We're currently on holiday in Bracklesham Bay and wanted to find a Hungry Horse as we eat there a lot at home and the food is always good. BIG MISTAKE!!!!!!!! We travelled 30 mins to Martlets. The staff were friendly and we ordered our meal using the app for 2 adults 2 children. The food took longer to arrive than we would normally have to wait, even though they didn't seem that busy and we were beginning to get impatient. First plate came, my daughter's jacket potato, chicken fillet and mini corn on the cob. She is 7 and looked at it and said "is that it!" I really should've taken a picture to post and show everyone just how bad this was, kicking myself for that. The chicken fillet and mini corn had definitely been cut into half and she had been given a half potion (she has this meal a lot). My husband even gave her some of his corn as the plate was really just empty. The table server must have been embarrassed bringing it out! The other childs meal burger and garlic bread was ok but again with the corn on the cob that was no thicker than your finger. I ordered burger chips and onion rings. Burger and chips arrived, no onion rings. I asked where they were and was told they had run out!!! No-one had bothered to say this, I would've expected to be offered something else instead, not be given a plate with something missing. Worse both the burger and the chips cold. I considered sending it back but we had waited so long and I was so cross by this time I just wanted to eat quickly and get out of there. My husband had sizzling steak, only it wasn't sizzling as it was when we have this in our local HH. The skillet was only just warm. He was lucky enough to have 2 if the finger wide pieces of corn on the cob though and at least his sweet potato fries were hot. We were looking forward to our meal out and Martlets you totally ruined our evening. I would never ever recommend you or return. You certainly need a new chef and from the standard comment I see from the manager on any complaint review, I think you also need a new manager. This meal was so bad I shall be contacting your head office...
