We stayed here the night of 29 August 2025, on one of our regular visits to see friends in Arundel. The room was large, clean, comfortable and quiet. There was plenty of space for us, our baggage and our dog in her bed on the floor. The bathroom had actual hooks where one can hang toiletry bags, clothes and towels as needed (pay attention, every other UK hotel - this is a cheap convenience for your guests that other countries figured out 50 years ago, along with mixer taps). There was good water pressure in the shower. The weather was relatively warm and we were pleased to be able to have the window open, with its secure fastenings making it secure when cracked open. The combined curtain/blind arrangement kept the room sufficiently dark for the short summer night. The pub's private parking is a boon in Arundel, where parking is almost always something between inconvenient and impossible.||Breakfast was excellent, with friendly and accommodating service (lovely hand-made coffees), good food made to order and a buffet of continental fixings. Every person on staff we met greeted us warmly, was helpful and seemed happy to be there. We will definitely stay again. You're off to a great...

I so wish I could give this place 5 stars. I will start with the good parts. This is a lovely pub in Arundel and fits in like a hand in a glove to the town. It’s an oldie pub that has a modern spin to its interior decor. There is plenty of range on the drinks front if a little pricy but it’s what you would expect from this kind of place and location. We also ate here. We had three very different meals all of which where fantastic. My fiancée especially enjoyed her lamb shank which was done to perfection. I on the other hand had the 8oz beef burger. The burger was delicious and very juicy with its blue cheese source setting my taste buds a real treat.

The only problem we encountered was the onion rings on the side which we ordered to go with my meal. They looked and tasted like the cheapest of onion rings that you could pick up from booker or Iceland rather than what you would expect for the price and the food it was accompanying. Such a shame. I did mention this to the waitress and was informed that she would let the chef know. Let’s hope that something will be done about this let down to such a otherwise...

We popped into this historic pub for a cheeky pint and it was actually very pleasant with decent snacks behind the bar. Always nice to visit a new pub wherever possible and I was pleased with my sudden decision. The pub itself was actually built in 1525 which, if my memory serves me correctly was the 26th year of Henry VIII, though we cannot forget that it featured a thatched roof and was a farm dwelling. Moreover, the building itself was owned by - and you won’t believe it - a stonemason, a linen draper (of all things!) and a vintner named Gabriel Scott (think this was in 1735). Did you know that, after Henry Macket became landlord in March 1764, beer was actually served in jugs called Brown Georges? Anyway, this place has always remained a traditional inn and is now owned by Hall & Woodhouse. Sorry if I missed out any details, my memory sometimes fails me.

Perfect Inn in the Perfect Location! We stayed at the St Mary’s Gate in for 2 nights (Friday and Saturday) while walking the South Downs Way. Everything was delightful. Our room had views of the Cathedral and the Arundel Castle Gardens and was so well appointed - with espresso and tea facilities, biscuits, chocolate, and a fresh milk option. We had dinner the both nights and wish we had more to try even more options. Gourmet food in the friendliest atmosphere imaginable. Their breakfast was one of the best we’ve had ever. Fresh locally sourced ingredients. We had to leave early on Sunday and they did a packed breakfast of the best ham and cheese on sourdough bread. We hope to be back to St Mary’s Gate Inn soon!

Spent 1 night here, while visiting Arundel. Very conveniently located, near town centre, next to the cathedral and opposite the castle garden. Plenty of on-site parking, plus spaces outside in the road, in the evening, although spaces disappeared during the day. Friendly staff. Only meal was breakfast, which was fine, but can't comment on the lunch or dinner. We had a good meal at the nearby Indian. The room was comfortable with plenty of tea / coffee. Only downside, it was a bit noisy with car traffic and pub visitors, but that's to be expected when staying in a town pub I guess! I also needed to re-tune the TV to get any channels, but most people don't go away to watch TV, so no big deal.
