Have been here a few times and have had a positive experience... Unfortunately on inviting a newbie after highly recommending the place, we were massively overcharged. There were 2 adults and 6 children in the party (aged between 6 and 11) and we were charged adult prices for all food and drinks! No choice given and the menu is not clear on distinguishing this. I had also pointed to some of the items (at what turned out to be the child's price) when ordering! Since this hadn't come up as an issue in previous visits it didn't even cross my mind to distinguish. It was only after I sat down and digested the enormous bill that I questioned the staff. No apology was offered just a clear statement of the fact that this was the adult price for EVERYTHING! No option was given at the till and as a big party entering a relatively small premises, wouldn't staff wonder? Why would they assume all children are choosing adult meals and drinks? A lovely morning of taking a group of children and their friends out has been very much ruined by this experience. Very disappointed. Also very embarrassed that the lady I had recommended the place to also endured the same overpricing as we paid separately. Half term entertainment is expensive enough. Chips for us on the front...
Read moreRecently we went here on a day trip to Barry Island. We planned to have breakfast and had looked into our options beforehand online. Initially we were going to go to John's cafe next door, but after comparing the menus on both shop fronts, for just a small amount more Whitfield and Jackson proclaimed to have far better quality ingredients and a slice of black pudding too. This was enough to change our direction. Very cozy inside, outdoor seating too, however I like to eat a breakfast indoors to keep it warm that bit longer. The food did not disappoint, absolutely delicious, very good quality produce, cooked to perfection and a fair price. Sourdough bread was delightful, the sausages and bacon were butcher quality as promised, To be honest we had nothing to fault. We we had no doubt that coming here was the correct choice. Washed it down with a cold can of Coca-Cola and away we went. I do think the staff could have been a little more "service with a smile", they didn't offer much interaction besides taking our order and handing us plates. Besides that a thoroughly good experience and I'd certainly make the journey here again if I find myself over that way again...
Read moreThis goes down as a 5 star for me. Now I have to say the food is great but not fantastic. The sourdough, the bacon were excellent. That bread was toasted perfectly - crisp but not hard. The bacon is one of the rare few I’ve tried in the UK where it is still moist and not dry. The award-winning sausages are passable and the harsh browns are as bad as they get - soggy and hard at the bottom. But what pushes this place over the top is the whole setup. The place is beautiful in my opinion. The setting by the beach makes it an ideal place to hang out and read. It is children and dogs friendly and while I was there, they added for the most adorable sights. I was alone and didn’t have time to try the cakes but they do look delightful. As an outsider, not from Cardiff, I would definitely make the drive again to eat and hang out here. The surrounding area with the amusement park, mini-golf and game arcades just add a whole...
