PizzaExpress — Restaurant in Birmingham

I took my children for dinner after a lovely day out. We had missed lunch and were pretty hungry so decided to order the family bundle (two large pizzas, a starter and two sides) and one Romana sized pizza, between three of us. I was planning on taking leftovers home and prefer to order too much rather than not enough.

When taking the order I asked the waiter "what is the kids eat free policy. Is there an age limit?" He very rudely looked at my children, scoffed and said "free meals are off the kids menu and its for under 11's" I said "never mind then, my son's 12 and we don't want to order off the kids menu" Both my children are tall and look like young adults. The waiter looked at them again and said "You can't get cheap for them anymore"!

I then started to place my order. The waiter loudly pointed out "That's A LOT of food. There's only three of you. Are you sure you want to order that last pizza?" I told him yes (my daughter wanted a Romana base and my son & I wanted different pizzas). He asked three times, getting louder each time, attracting the attention of the other diners and said "well OK, I don't know what your appetite is like, but if that's what you want". Then he took the menu's and walked off. It was very embarrassing.

Before we finished he came to the table next to us, interrupted thier conversation to ask them if they wanted a box for thier food. One of the women was still eating, but he had no regard for that. The other lady did want a box, but they were clearly not ready to leave yet.

When he brought the box to them, he asked if our meal was OK. I said yes (the food was lovely) and I asked for boxes for our left overs. He then walked over to the chef, spoke to him in Italian, pointed at us, then the chef turned looked over and the waiter rolled his eyes. The waiter knew my daughter could see what he was doing as he looked her straight in the eye as he talked. When the waiter brought the boxes over he proceeds to ask me very loudly if everything was OK with the food. I said yes, it was lovely. He asked again twice, if I was I sure. I replied "yes and we have enough left over for lunch tomorrow too". He huffed and walked off!

This man completely ruined our dining experience. What should have been a nice relaxing enjoyable end to a lovely day out ended up leaving us all feeling judged, uncomfortable and annoyed. It is non of his concern how much we order and it should not be an issue if we want to take home leftovers.

I was going to escalate this to a manager before I left but for the sake of the peace of other diners, I decided to come home and leave this review/complaint. I feel if I'd escalated there in person this waiter would have just gotten more loud and obnoxious, I'd already had enough of his rudeness and just wanted to leave.

I spent £82 last night. The food was lovely. But the service made it feel worth £22! We usually order desert to take out and on this occasion I was going to order a pizza with a meat topping to take home for my husband, but I decided against it just to get away from this rude little man!

So, in summary, Pizza Express Harborne - last night your waiter upset customers and lost sales for you. As a bare minimum, please train this man on service and...

I want to start this review with a huge thank you to Chloe, who served our table of 16 for my Daughters 5th Birthday on Saturday 16th August. Chloe's attitude to serving and customer service went above and beyond all expectations and she truly made the night so special. We had an absolutely incredible meal, every course served hot, well presented and delicious. We had a number of dietary requirements and allergies and Chloe was both knowledgeable on how to order in an allergy safe way and truly went above and beyond this in knowing the lemons in the table water are not vegan! We had two incidents at our table, a broken glass and a child toileting issue, both were resolved quickly, safely and professionally, following all the health and safety training its clear Chloe knew well. Overall we had an amazing meal, three happy children, a happy baby and all the adults had fun too. We have always chosen Pizza Express for your extensive vegan menu but we will choose Pizza Express Harborne again just because of the experience we had for this meal. 1st time going was ok. This time tonight wasn't the best of experience. The food was amazing no issues there. The staff treated us like we was invisible which would of been fine if it was busy but towards the end of the night at 9pm onwards there's 1 only paying customer in there. We was waiting nearly 40 minutes after finishing our main meal for our plates to be removed and sat their waiting and waiting for the bill which staff was to busy standing around talking and playing on their personal phones. 1 member looked over 5 times to then ignore us whilst we sat in our coats ready to go at which point a woman staff waiter walked past me ignoring us then we had to ask for the bill. Real poor from the later staff members for their actions. Their was one nice waiter he works really hard Tallish and shaved head he was on point both times we went. Something needs to change there, with how staff treats paying customers. More training by asking customers if they would like the bill.
