Mother’s Day lunch 2025, take the good with the bad

Food - at around £25 this is clearly on the pricier side of roasts available, desserts around £9. I have to say the food was outstanding, especially puddings, one of us said this was one of the best we’d had. No set menu for Mother’s Day so it does add up if you have 2 or 3 courses

Drinks - 2 pints, a glass of Prosecco and a coke came to well over £20, expected I suppose near Birmingham these days. Hobsons pale ale was very well kept

Service - though staff were all friendly, and I understand Mother’s Day is a busy day and staff will be tired and missing their own Mother’s Day, at this price point you do expect a lot better service than this. Waiting for someone to seat us, no one came back to take a drinks order before the mains arrived, the water for the table we ordered never arrived, and a long wait for our dessert orders to be taken. It did feel like we were forgotten as the others rooms were busy

Setting - the building itself is beautifully done out developed from a historic office premises. Separate cosy rooms adjoin the bar and main restaurant rooms which each seem to have their own vibe. A genuinely lovely place to spend Mother’s Day. Brunning & price have some wonderful locations and their commitment to redeveloping old buildings should be commended

Summary - fantastic food is let down by poor service. Perhaps we were unlucky as can happen at a restaurant where one table goes from bad to worse. Mom enjoyed it which is...

Great place to eat & drink Location:

Near the botanical gardens with off street parking and next to a pay and display car park. Beautiful Victorian building inside and out, no expense has been spared in creating this restaurant. The atmosphere was great, felt warm and welcoming, a great place to relax with a few drinks.

Food:

Starters; We had the Carrot and coriander soup, Korean chicken wings, Spiced beetroot and chick pea fritters and the Deep fried Cornish Brie. Everyone really enjoyed their starters, I had the chicken wings, they were nice and crispy and extremely moreish, I could’ve ate a lot more of them.

Mains; We had the Fish Pie, Steak and kidney suet pudding, Steak burger and the Honey roasted ham. The pies looked amazing, they came out without a pie dish or foil, perfectly presented on the plate, the honey roast ham was a huge portion and looked great. I had the burger, great meat, succulent and very tasty, cooked just right too (medium rare).

Service: Our waitress was lovely, very polite, friendly and attentive, no complaints there. The only downside to the evening was that we booked a table for 19:30, but when we arrived (5 minutes before) they said that the table wasn’t ready, we had to wait 30 minutes to finally sit-down, which is not good enough when you have pre booked.

Everyone thoroughly enjoyed all their meals and we will be definitely going back again soon. I would’ve given it 5 stars…. but due to having to wait for our table for 30 minutes I’ve...

I really enjoyed my experience in The Physician. The food, staff, and atmosphere are really outstanding. I hope my comment can help your restaurant to be much more successful in the future.

With the classy, vintage, and modern theme of your restaurant. It makes me more relaxed to enjoy my meal. However, I found out the background music may a little bit un-match the style. I suggest that you may use some jazz instead. That could provide more leisure and chill moments to the customer.

I tried the Scallop and Crispy beef salad. First of all, the scallop was stunning, perfectly cooked, and well-seasoned. The texture of the puree is really rich, surprisingly pretty matched with the scallop. Really outstanding as an appetizer. And the crispy beef salad is colorful and really fresh. Combination of all the veggie, the texture of the whole dishes was so crunchy, with the sweet and sour dressing. However, the beef is kind of too salty and chewy. If the salad is handling the crunchy part, for the meat I will suggest you may use the slow-cook beef slice instead, probably WANYU or KOBE. Due to the taste and the combination, it can really open up your appetizer. In my opinion, this dish is more perfect in the appetizer but with less portion.

Lastly, The physician is such a warm and sweet dining place for everybody. I will defiantly bring my friends and family to come to your restaurant again in the future. Hope your restaurant all the best...

What a wonderful gastropub. We walked in on a busy bank holiday weekend and they found a spot for us. The staff are absolutely lovely, everyone we encountered was friendly, efficient and professional. The menu is varied and has something for everyone. The fish and chips were fantastic. Large crispy golden fries, probably twice fried. Fish batter was light crispy and delicious. Unfortunately the mushy peas were minted which should be a crime against humanity (whoever decided that an overpowering herb like mint works with a delicate sweet vegetable like peas and started this dreadful trend should be shot) but that is the only thing anyone could gripe about and the perfection of everything else on the plate meant you didn't mind leaving the peas. The mixed roast of beef and pork was absolutely fantastic. Beef was cooked to perfection and still pink. Porchetta was flavoursome and delicious. All the sides were delicious. The vegetables were al dente and not the mush you often find with Sunday roasts. Yorkshire pudding was light and delicious. The gravy was a tad on the salty side which makes me think it's based on granules or powder but in the scheme of things that's a minor complaint. Drinks menu is varied with something for everyone and our wee man loved his brownie dessert. We would definitely come back next time we are in Birmingham, a true gem on the outskirts.

Visited here last year for drinks and saw the food being brought out to the tables and was instantly impressed by the quality and the food smelt amazing. Now one year on and I decided to attend for my birthday at the weekend, and the food did not disappoint! Firstly, the atmosphere inside the pub is very warm and inviting with old style character. You can tell it’s a popular location with the number of people attending for food, the pub is also very spacious with plenty of space, but I would recommend booking in advance as it is a popular location. Once seated we were well looked after and proceeded to order drinks and starters. I tried the pigeon for the first time and was impressed! Afterwards I ordered the lamb shoulder which tasted amazing! Just about had enough room for dessert which was a banoffee cheesecake. This was the best meal I have had in a while and really could not fault anything. Service, food and drinks were all great with a good selection at the bar and on the menu. If you are looking for a quality meal for a celebration, then I would highly recommend visiting here! Thank you to all staff at the Physician! We shall return.
