Bar Tat has been a staple in my life for over 20 years, and while the beer remains excellent, particularly the selection from Vocation Brewery, the experience has recently been undermined by an unfortunate shift in atmosphere.
The issue isn't the quality of the beer – it’s top-notch, as always. The problem lies with the music. The staff seem to have taken it upon themselves to curate a playlist that channels the feel of a 1970s rock pub. While I have no objection to a bit of Asia or Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, the relentless volume and choice of obscure B-sides are overwhelming. It's often far too loud, making conversation impossible and creating an uncomfortable environment for what should be a relaxing pint.
It leaves me wondering if this is part of a poorly executed rebrand or simply staff imposing their personal preferences at the expense of the customers' experience. Whatever the reason, it feels out of step with what this pub once was.
Bar Tat has always stood for great beer and a welcoming atmosphere, and while one half of that remains intact, the other is faltering. For now, I’ll keep coming back for the beer, but I hope they reconsider the approach to music before it drives more long-standing...
Read moreBar Tat has been a pretty consistent part of the Ilkley pub scene for a considerable number of years and for many of those a place of real atmosphere. Now, sadly, it's trying to be something I don't think it can ever be in a small town - a mass-market city centre bar catering for bar-crawl clients with a need for junk-food. We gave it a chance and and ate there after a gym session so weren't looking for posh nosh whilst still in our shorts but what we were served was poor indeed. Street food, including burgers can be some of the best food around but this was poor mass market fayre served via an overly complex, prepay app that didn't work, on flimsy trays. A poor, unimaginative menu from Slap and Pickle. We won't eat there again....
Read moreWe've had lunch at BarTat several times now and never been disappointed. At worst, it's good hearty value for money pub food. At it's best, like today, it reaches a notch or two above that. I had the pie of the day, a generous slice of beef with pancetta and Stilton, paired with lovely buttery smooth mash, roast vegetables and unctious gravy. My wife had a huge"small" sausage and mash also with roast veggies and gravy. Both of us came away full and very satisfied. The beer is reliably good, with some unusual guests. The staff friendly and efficient, atmosphere relaxed and pleasant, prices very reasonable for the quality. Highly...
