Underwhelming, atrocious service and sold out of most things

Sunday afternoon. We pre ordered due to being a larger table and understood we would be on two separate tables. When we arrived we were placed on two tables in the middle of the bar. They informed us they didn’t have one of the starters. One of our party wanted to swap from Gammon to beef and we were told there was none left. No one took a drinks order so we had to keep going to the bar ourselves. All of the beer was warm. To the point we had to put ice in our San Miguel. The prawn starter arrived for four of us and we each had a different number of prawns and varying quality of garlic bread. The roast was cold and the majority of veg is frozen. We specifically requested no cabbage on one due to an allergy and they all came with cabbage. When we queried it, no one was bothered to change it. They free pour wine and don’t follow the Weights and Measures act of 1985. They tried to clear our table when some of us were still eating. When it came to desserts, the ones rubbed out were available and the ones showing weren’t….. We ordered two brownies and at no point did they mention any nuts. Again, showing a complete lack of allergen awareness. I tried to get the attention of the manager but no one was once bothered about our experience. No check backs, no “how was your meal” and not even a...

Came out for a meal for my dad's 50th birthday with my partner, 2 year old son, my mum and two brothers, booked in advance too. The food (I had the blue cheese burger which was lovely!) and atmosphere was absolutely great... Until some stupid old man came up to us and asked my son and our dog to keep quiet. My dad politely said to him it was a family pub and that theres plenty of other places that they could sit. He then went and called my dad a t@t and said he knows the type of people we are! Absolutely mind-blowing, we came out for a family meal for my dad's birthday paid £120 for it and my dad was called a t@t and my family scumbags by a punter that the staff didn't even know. The staff dealt with it really well and were very sorry for issues caused. I genuinely feel that his custom should have been asked to be taken elsewhere though, you just don't go saying things like that to a family in a family pub! For that alone and the experience with a punter like that has put me off from coming again which is an absolute shame because I love The Brown Cow coming several times over the...

In these extraordinary times I was tempted to hold back. However I’m mindful that the public use this site to make decisions about where they spend their harm earned cash. So I’m being honest. The food was warm, a plus. The starter chicken terrine was a jellified grey lump which resembled something the cat played a role in. Unappetising but in fairness tasted ok, wouldn’t recommend. The main (Xmas dinner) very uninteresting/bland. Desert ok nothing special. But far and above what stood out was the terrible service. The staff were surly bordering on aggressive from the outset with a ‘can’t do’ attitude. Clearly lacked experience and finesse despite the prices. Confrontational to the extent that we had to assert ourselves when interrupting our conversation about who ordered what. Meal with drinks cost little under The Ivy prices but came nothing near. Summary:sub standard pub food and quality restaurant...

Good meals great beer. 2020 June 2023 update: In the spirit of public service, we checked out the Brown Cow menu yesterday. Nachos starter is good. Belly pork is magnificent, but small. House burgers are also very tasty, if not very big. Vegetarian burger (look, you get the full review, whether you'd eat it or not) was a hit with my wife. We tried the Golden Best, Landlord and Ramtam. All lovely and the Golden Best, as a light mild, suits a hot evening! Our extraordinarily polite hippie waiter was great!! We went for a walk and it all spiralled from there.. 😀

Went here for lunch for our first visit. Pub was nice, staff polite and quick to take drink orders. Menu was up on wall so easy to see. Our server was great at checking ingredients to ensure no dairy. My partner and I ordered local sausage sandwich with red onion relish and mustard meyo with fries and onion rings. Sausages were lovely, fries crisp and onion rings tasty. Will definitely visit again
