A good pub and it has been the best on St. Michaels hill for a long time (years) - although since coming under new ownership the Colston Arms is back in with a shout. The garden is great, the inside is good, the front bar is especially nice for a quite drink with others. Essentially the selling point for this pub is the pub its self not how its ran, which we will come onto next.
This pubs gets a lot of footfall, which has probably gone to its head a little - i.e. it thinks it's a bit better than it actually is so the customer service side of things has tailed off, it has become increasingly pricey - over £4 quid for a pint of thatchers!!! - next pitfall more often than not you will get a good pint, not a great pint. The selection of ales is sometimes good sometimes weak - the lager is ok when fresh, however its not something they pride themselves on - and rumour has it that the tray swill goes back into the barrel! Finally the food, well I haven't tried the roast yet but the daily food is OK, nothing special and a...
Read moreVery friendly and quick staff here. There's a nice beer garden in the back with plenty of plants and cover overhead to protect against the Great British Weather! They have a well curated selection of ales that they change regularly, with plenty of other drink options. We have never had the food here so can't comment on the quality, but there is a good selection on the menu with vegetarian options to boot. I would describe the inside of the pub as being traditionally British, it's quite narrow and can be a bit dark indoors, but still pretty nice. The stairs down to the toilets are steep so perhaps not suitable for anyone with issues walking. There is also a variety of board games and a dart board inside. It can get very busy on weekend evenings so may be tricky to...
Read moreA wonderful, characterful pub with a lovely comfortable feel to it, which is an increasing rarity in these days of gastropub formula.
The bar is small, well stocked and very cosy, but there's room for plenty with a couple of snugs at the front, widening to the bar and enlarging further as one heads to the back. The large beer garden is walled all round for privacy and perfect for being outside in warmer weather.
There's a limited range of proper, proper, PROPER beer, which will rotate, as any good pub will do.
The venue is popular with students and other folk alike, and a note to all that the bogs are down a steep flight of steps, in case access/mobility are of...
