Where New York has the Empire State Building, Bristol has the Cabot Tower. But this is where that comparison ends. Whilst the Empire State can be trumped by a trip up the Rockefeller, Cabot stands unrivalled as the finest lofty viewpoint across the historic city of Bristol.
Climbing the winding staircase gives but a glimpse of the trials and tribulations that Cabot must have faced some 400 years prior to the erection of this fine tower, created in tribute to his pioneering journey to Canada. Although climbing the tower could be seen as somewhat less of an achievement than Cabot’s, it was surely no less satisfying.
Even more extraordinary is that the tower is free to climb. I have not plotted the thrill to cost ratio of this tower compared to other towers I have climbed, but if I did i suspect it would be off the scale.
From the top the four sided vantage point provided breathtaking views across all vistas of this fine city. This meant that we could see all of the other attractions Bristol had to offer in just 5 minutes. Read moreOn a recent visit to Cabot Tower, I was not only impressed by the breathtaking views but also by an unexpected encounter with a squirrel. As I was climbing the tower, I noticed a small squirrel perched precariously on a narrow ledge, seemingly unable to get down. It appeared that the squirrel had been chased up the tower by a badger and was now stranded.
Without hesitation, I came to the squirrel's rescue. I carefully guided it down the tower, coaxing it with gentle words and offering it a piece of my sandwich. Once the squirrel was safely on the ground, it performed a small dance as if to express its gratitude.
This heartwarming experience added to the overall charm of my visit to Cabot Tower. The tower is not only a historic landmark but also a haven for wildlife. If you're looking for a place to enjoy stunning views and encounter some friendly furry creatures, Cabot Tower is definitely...
