I can’t believe we haven’t visited this beaut before - the fab family activity space at the RWA (discovered as part of @Visit Bristol’s #summerinbristol campaign) My 4yo is BIG into art atm (inspired mainly by Art Ninja) so it was the perfect spot to fill an afternoon. It’s FREE entry and has lots of lovely activities for kids. Some of Wilf’s highlights were the dressing up rail, puppet theatre and small world wooden figures. There’s also a cute reading corner, lots of drawing and collage bits and some creative apps on the iPad. I loved the giant screens that displayed work that had been created by kids in the space. Such an inspiration for budding artists. 🎨 Bonus points for the marvellous Spicer and Cole cafe at the gallery ❤️☕️ This space would be great teamed up with a run around Fort Gardens or Brandon Hill. Have you visited yet? 📍RWA Royal West of England Academy, Queen’s Road, Clifton Bristol BS8 1PX 💰Free entry to the family space, ground floor and Kenny gallery 📆 Open Tues-Sun 🕙 10am - 5pm #prinvite #bristolmum #wanderingmamastreets #bristolwithkids #bristolparents #freedaysout

There are several galleries and exhibitions going on. The second floor is usually thematic. When I went, there’s an exhibition about African art, renewal and refugee. There are works of Monet, Pissarro, Heartfield etc. Downstairs there’s a gallery on Brexit and illustrations of Brexit for children’s books. The admission is free for students. There’s also an academician gallery. Definitely worth a visit. Since the exhibition changes, it may be worth it to get a membership at the RWA.

An excellent gallery. Newly refurbished with greatly improved accessibility and an excellent cafe. A varied set of exhibitions including the annual open submission each autumn. The gallery spaces are really beautiful in themselves. Enough room to show substantial pieces or a large exhibition without overwhelming. Two smaller rooms are usually free to enter. The main gallery usually charges a fee. There is an active friends group.

This is my second visit to the newly reopened RWA and the brilliant 'Me, Myself, I' exhibition.

This exhibition covers the art of the 'Self portrait' and its continuing place within art history with some amazing and surprising works.

Hung across 3 newly refurbished galleries, it combines works by leading contemporary artists such as Sarah Lucas, Gavin Turk and Gillian Wearing. Alongside the likes of Anthony Gormley, Lucian Freud and Elizabeth Frink. We also get to see pieces by RWA academicians Peter Randell- Page, Roz Cuthbert and Angela Lizon.

Spanning over 300years this exhibition definitely warrants more than one visit, or if you can't manage that, do it in 2 halves with break in the spacious new Spicer + Cole café with its magnificent Albert Irvin abstract. A...

On visiting today I was extremely disappointed with the attitude from the receptionist. On enquiring whether pensioners could purchase concession tickets she was patronising and quite frankly rude. She stated that 'old people' were their demographic and therefore would have to pay the full price. To be honest the price point was not my issue, it was the disparaging tone with which the information was delivered. Maybe your "receptionists' would benefit from some customer service training in at least...
