Being a Bristolian I've heard a lot about this pub; it's known for its ale, food and great atmosphere ....
I was so disappointed and can only assume they were having an off night because it was totally below average and not what I was expecting.
The beer choice looked impressive from the outside but when you got to the bar and inspected the kegs you soon realised it was the same brand!
The service was terrible, seriously. I've never experienced anything so disorganised. Eight of us ordered food and only seven of us received food. I ordered the beer battered fish with chips and peas, the fish was the size of a tadpole. The chips were from frozen and had the texture of being reheated. The peas were served in this small bowl which were blatantly stuck under a grill to keep warm while the rest of the food was cooked making them hard, dried and crispy. Our meals came out in dribs and drabs and one order (the Potato and Leek soup) came two hours later. By the time we finished it was a good hour and our tables we cluttered with plates and beer glasses huddled up together, it was entertaining watching the bar staff eat their chips and do a cross-words, not battering an eye to our drowning situation. I had to ask them to clear the table! Any decent pub with good staff would know that they need to look out for clearing space after a meal. It's simple stuff which they did not have down.
I wont be going back, and I don't recommend ordering food unless you have the patients of a saint. It was really crap. Not worth the money....
Read moreI've been reading about this place for years as a great place for Sunday lunch.
The kitchen's open until 6pm and despite the fact that it says "booking recommended" on the website, we took a chance and went along about 4pm. We were fortunate to get a cancellation and got a table downstairs. We were however, unfortunate, as it has been so busy, we only really had the choice of roast pork or cod. The service was pleasant and the roast was £10 for 1 course (£15 if you added dessert or starter). When we asked, we were told that normally there's full choice up until 4pm, but it's always booked at least 2 days beforehand. We feel that the downstairs is cosier than the busy upstairs bar, but everyone was really friendly.
Despite not being able to give comparable reviews (for the Grain Barge from last week), when I had roast lamb (it was 95p cheaper than GB), the Rose just had the edge. Obviously the advantage of the Grain Barge was its location and views on the harbour. And I enjoyed both, but food-wise, the Rose of Denmark's roast potatoes were just that little bit tastier and crunchier (although the Yorkshire...
Read moreNot quite sure where this pub’s reputation comes from. I walked out of my way to try this establishment because of its self-proclaimed ‘good beer’ and ‘good-food’. To start with the beer that I ordered – I think it was Gem – was drinkable but was not as fresh as other pubs I’ve visited in the vicinity. It was Monday night and £5 a-meal-night: a selection of bog-standard pub-food meals. For five pounds you don’t expect a banquet, however what you do not expect is to be presented with scampi that you could use for practice at the driving range. They were so over-cooked you have to wonder what the chef was thinking to serve them as edible. I understand the concept of value pub-meals but surely they are supposedly suitable for eating. Had I been asked I would have quietly expressed my displeasure. I was not so I’m expressing it here. Though I base my opinion on only one visit I am able to distinguish fresh beer and I can spot terribly cooked meals and as a result it will be a long time until I offer my...
