We went for Sunday lunch today, there were 6 in our party. Our food had just been served and the waiter brought over 3 glasses of wine, he then accidently spilt one all over my husbands dinner, the table, the walls as well as my light grey top, my babies white top and my husband's t-shirt (but it was black, less of an issue). 2 of them cleared it up, pretty quickly, grabbed another dinner and replaced the spilt wine. They made light of the situation and we laughed along with them. When the bill came, to my surprise, they asked for the full amount. They also by this point, still hadn't actually apologised for the incident. I raised this when they came for payment, they offered to knock off the cost of a glass of wine. Another of my party said it wasn't acceptable, so they asked what we wanted. He replied £50. The waiter then shouted to a waitress, 'they're refusing to pay.' A few moments later another lady came out. I explained the situation to her, STILL no apology, just an offer to pay a dry cleaning bill. We explained that would be a real inconvenience, we had eaten at different times, clothes were stained and still no actual apology from the business. She said she was a small business and they we can't just make up the discount, which I confirmed they actually asked for. Eventually she agreed to knock off £50. Another waitress came for payment and made a comment about the fact we 'obviously wouldn't be tipping.' When we left, my husband actually tried to leave a tip commenting that accidents happen. The same women who took payment threw it back on the table and said 'don't worry about it.'
It's a really disappointing outcome and somewhat upsetting. The food was actually really lovely, and whilst accidents happen, there was still an issue. If they had actually apologised for the accident and offered a gesture of good will, however much it may have been, we would have more than likely accepted it, I really just wanted acknowledgement. But they didn't, and it turned sour. Accidents happen but the service failed here and they should have put...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreOn Christmas Day it was decided with my 2 nephews & family that we descend on the refurbished Blaise Inn for lunch today. Well known to all of us from the late 70's as my sister moved in opposite the pub with her then young family....I moved in to what is now Louise & Ians' cottage. After 30+ years we witnessed many changes so, obviously we needed to see it now! Peter, Nicola, Ian & Louise have certainly turned it around! Beautifully transformed and the garden will be great when the weather improves! We were warmly greeted by very attentive staff and had the choice of many beers (including tasters) and other drinks. Now to the menu....very different perhaps from what one may expect from a local village pub. We decided to avoid copying each other and therefore chose either the steak or the seared salmon...the pheasant bubble & squeak croquette or the seared halloumi etc. All beautifully presented and tasted wonderful. Normally I veer away from desserts but had to try the poached pear with ginger cream (yummie!)....the others had either the hazelnut meringue or sticky toffee pudding! Apparently, Louise & Ian were having their first day off since opening in early December but don't worry, whoever was working in the kitchen did an absolutely sterling job! Until I can get back to my own restaurant in India (thanks Covid!), I'll be back to The Blaise! Well...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreWe visited last year and it was excellent, so decided to revisit.....sadly, this was a very different culinary experience.
The management have clearly been blinded by their success, the food wasn't anywhere near as good as the previous visit.
The starter was parsnip soup, this was probably the best thing we ate, the cheese scone was delicious, the soup....not so much, £8 for a couple of shallow laddals seemed excessive.
The main, roast beef....three small slices of beef (which in fairness was decent enough) a very very dry Yorkshire pudding and a sparce plate of vegetables that had been left under the lights for far too long, with literally a dribble of gravy. Pretty grim imho.
Dessert, Morrocan spiced chocolate pot....one of the most disgusting things I have ever put in my mouth! It was topped with cardamom cream which was nice, but the chocolate was nigh on frozen and the tesure was grainy, almost like it was split.
We won't rush back in all honesty, shame really, nice venue , nice staff, just really...
