What a shame!
I am new to the area and consider myself a fish and chip connoisseur! OK not really but certainly I’m working my way through the local establishments to find my new regular chippy as we eat them once a week.
The quality of the haddock was excellent, fresh, firm and meaty. The rest of the food (peas, scallops, chips and battered sausages) wasn’t excellent but average or slightly better.
I do however have three gripes!
We always order specials as not only do we like a bigger fish but it guarantees they are cooked fresh. The specials here are much the same size as a regular fish from most other chippies.
The establishment is also a restaurant and is clearly aiming for the top end of the market which is reflected in their prices. Their failing is being too greedy though! For example, a quality establishment would package the food in a cardboard carton rather than paper ensuring the produce doesn’t sweat whilst being transported home.
The staff were also quite young and whilst trying their best they were a little rudderless (and stressed a little) which probably contributed to being overcharged too (£1.20).
The management has clearly set their stall out to produce quality products and in the main they have however if I’m paying over 60% more for a special (than a regular) I expect a 60% bigger fish.
If I am paying a premium price for, what I expect the establishment would suggest is a premium product, I expect they could invest a couple of pence in better packaging ensuring their food arrives to the customers plate in its best condition.
The staff are friendly but young and therefore I suspect cheaper than older staff and whilst I don’t have a problem with that per se, it seems to be indicative of the management style in cutting a few corners.
I can say with confidence that my search for a new regular haunt would have ended had corners not been cut however my search continues and Blakeley’s will remain a...
Read moreOverall to me this is a proper fish and chip shop it's a bonus finding a place that sells both cod and haddock.
The ladies behind the counter both friendly and polite. The fish was moist and flakey, the batter even though I asked for lightly battered wasn't over cooked lovely crisp batter. The don't mess about with stupid portion sizes for chips just a decent yorkshire portion which would feed 2 southerners.
Only niggle for me was menu board was other side from the till and they call a large fish and fish special and instead of having it under the normal fish it's on other side of the menu board.
But other than that I would highly recommend this place if you've got a hankering for something decent and filling. Oh one last thing there's not many places nowadays where you can get fish and chips for a tad under a tenner well chuffed.
Will definitely be going back for my Friday...
