I went to the Royal Standard last night. A place ive often tried to avoid because of its reputation as a pub. For a while i thought it was one of these pubs which served Inian on the side with your pint for a fiver, so i never really made the effort to go.
We went there last night because to be quite frank, we have no other places left to try in Cambridge so we were kind of stuck.
The first thing i noticed was that this place is down Mill Road but it actually has good parking! and lots of it! Once you go inside we were greeted by a well presented and quite large resturant which is quite clearly no longer a pub but a complete authentic indian resturant from head to toe. The decoration was a bit bland but I was just happy not to be sitting there eating with the football on or a load of drunken pissheads in the corner shouting.
What impressed me about this place was it also served Thai food aswell.. So if you ever want to take a few people unsure on Indian food they have more of an option.
The place was average price. Nothing special. You were paying the standard £3.50 for a Cobra beer, a curry was about £4.95 and rice was about £1.95. For the money however the quality began to show immediately!
The Papadums were thick and delicious and the 4 sauces that came with it were above the usual quality of all Tandooris we have tried in Cambridge. The mango chutney and lime pickel were exceptionally amazing! Definatly a must if you ever decide to go!
By the time we had finished our Papdums our food was only another 5 mins. The food was well presented and served with the usual dignity and mannors youd expect from most Indian tandooris!
The Vindaloo was delicious. Anna meantioned how the chicken was incredibly juicy and that there was a good chicken to potato ratio compared to the usual "high potato, low chicken" ratio you get in some places. The curry itself tasted like a Vindaloo should taste! Hot and firey with a slight burn in your mouth that left you feeling like you had a true Vindaloo! We did find however that it didnt leave that burning sensation in our bellys though it wasnt much of a concern as it was clearly cooked and tasted delicious!
If the curry had been cooked just a little hotter it would have been perfect!
The rice portions were good too. We have found often in some places that they have been quite stingey, not here.
The Naan bread was alot very tastey.
Once we were done we were presented with the standard desert menu which we sensibly avoided! Afterwards we were presented our hot towel and a chocolate mint! which is always a plus for us because we have noticed alot of places now serve choclate orange, WTF?
The bill was bang on average in price as was expected by the cost of everything on the menu. We ended up paying £24 for three papadums, two curries, one rice, one naan, 1 1/2 pints of Cobra beer and two lemonades.
This place ended up being much better than i ever imagined and definatly is one of the better places in Cambridge to go. I actually feel foolish for not going sooner! The food was of a high quality, the price was fair and the service and presentation of the place was very good. Along with good parking and an optional Thai menu i highly reccommend The Royal...
Read moreThis is a real pub. Not a tacky Greene King or Wetherspoons. This is a real pub. Probably the best Cambridge Pub I have been in since the Flying Pig closed. The staff are really polite, chatty, knowledgeable with their products and have great taste in music that is played in the bar! it's a nice atmosphere and I was able to strike up some conversations while enjoying a pint of cider and some delicious Greek souvlaki (which is also 5*) from Tzatziki (a seperate food vendor on their site, there is no pub kitchen).
Most remarkable though was the sheer variety of actual ciders, and all of which were £5 a pint (reasonable for Cambridge). They had such a vast selection of genuine dry, medium and sweet ciders. None of that tacky Pinch's or bog standard Strongbow, or soft Koppaburgs but real, hard Ciders with the smokey aged oak taste that comes with the authentic country brewed style of Norfolk and Suffolk, or France's...
Read moreThis is a welcome addition to Mill Rd, the return of the Standard. Already its very popular and almost impossibly popular on Friday nights. Very good food (especially the steaks) with a great range of quality bar snacks if you are peckish. The beer selection is also very good with something tasty for most people. The gin selection is unrivalled in east Cambridge, and reasonably priced. Being a pub that has just reopened after a long hiatus it is nice to see it start from scratch and create its own regulars and customer type. So far it seems quite well mixed perhaps favouring the young to middle age working professional. Not many students. A very good bet as a place to meet, or when you need to slake your...
