One of my favourite pubs in Canterbury. Low-ceilinged, and a bit old-fashioned with a loyal clientele of all sorts. Leffe on tap (go easy), eclectic pictures on the wall (a weird fox in a tweed jacket is my favourite), and a great jukebox. The pavement is wide at this point on Palace Street, so there are lots of tables outside for a Covid-safe light ale if you're at all concerned.

Lovely well kept traditional pub. Excellent local real ales, good prices and friendly staff. Black Country pork scratchings, good music with a cozy relaxed atmosphere and even though we weren't eating this time the menu looked nice. Time seemed to pass very quickly. Will be back.

Went for lunch. Had a ploughman (but not that fabulous ) lunch and a Friars beer. Food was god. Service was indifferent and not caring. Just so I g their job nothing more. Music was loud and unpleasant.

Went in with 3 adults and my 2 kids, we were the only customers. A new bar person was on her first shift. I was served a pint of Neck Oil that (I thought) tasted dodgy, I know what Neck Oil tastes like, i've had hundreds of pints of the stuff.

Another, older barperson poured himself some Neck Oil from the pump, supped some, looked at me and said "Tastes fine to me". I obviously wanted it replaced, as I didn't think it tasted fine, he wasn't going to replace it. I went to sit down as he talked loudly to the new female staff member about how to deal with "problematic" customers, it was humiliating.

I then had to sit with my family, and no drink, for half an hour until they'd finished, i remind you there was no one else in the pub.

I don't know what the guy thought he was achieving by treating me like I was trying to get one over on him, for some inexplicable reason. I'd had 1 swig from a pint poured by a new staff member, it was definitely pony, and by acting like a big man in front of said new, young, female staff member, and humiliating me, he guaranteed a bad review and that no one in my family will ever drink in...

Went here with a group of friends (men and women) a while ago and only the women got ID’d for drinks. We all look the same age and it was very obvious that the bar attendant just didn’t want to serve the women. So much so that when my friend gave her boyfriend a fiver to buy her a drink in front of the bar attendant he was happy to oblige. I understand this could easily have just been protocol in the pub but made us feel uncomfortable and unwelcome. We are all between 23-25 so well over the legal age. Warning to women- bring your ID to...
