The Old Buttermarket in Canterbury is a charming and cozy pub that blends tradition and comfort perfectly. Located near the cathedral, it offers a welcoming atmosphere with its dark wood interior and the option to sit outside at pavement tables, allowing you to soak in the historic surroundings.
During our visit, we ordered our usual shandy and classic fish with chips. The process is straightforward: place your order at the bar, which is typical of traditional British pubs. The service was efficient, with friendly staff who were attentive but not intrusive. Our food arrived promptly and was cooked to perfection. The fish was crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and the chips were golden and satisfyingâexactly what youâd hope for in this quintessential British dish.
One thing that stood out was the cleanliness of the pub, especially the restrooms, which were spotless and well-maintained, adding to the overall pleasant experience. The pub's location near the cathedral and its inviting atmosphere make it a fantastic spot to relax after exploring Canterbury.
For those who appreciate a good pint, The Old Buttermarket also offers a selection of cask ales, which adds to its traditional British pub charm. Whether you're looking for a refreshing drink or a hearty meal, this pub is a great choice. Highly recommended for anyone...
Read moreWorst Sunday lunch experience for a very very long time. My girlfriend and I decided to try the Buttermarket on a spur of the moment. Big mistake. Both of us ordered the roast beef. When it finally came... the portion was quite small and very very dry. So we decided to order extra veg and a jug of gravy, but after 15 minutes of waiting and no sign of it anywhere I gave up and had to send mine back as it was stone cold. When I asked for it to be sent back I was rudely asked why. Then when the veg did finally turn up, it was minus the gravy! So I confronted the waitress and was told quite sternly that they were very busy and that I had to wait for the veg to be cooked as extra and had to wait even longer for gravy. Even though the waitress in question decided to jump behind the bar and started to pull pints and serve two other tables rather than chase my order. She didnât even bother to ask my partner, (who by now politely started to work her way through the dry roast) If she needed any sauces! After I complained, I was told she would take off the cost of one of the meals and two soft drinks! Haha thanks...What a joke, seeing as only one of us ate anyway. Terrible service, pls avoid like the plague!!! Better service in...
Read moreEnjoyed a great beer at The Old Buttermarket, but was disappointed by supper there. I went around 18:00, and asked if gluten free burger buns were served. The waitress told me they were, and said she'd alert the kitchen to my gluten allergy. She then took the orders from the rest of my party, and my friend tried ordering three different items. The restaurant had run out of ALL THREE of her options. The waitress then returned and told me they DID NOT have gluten free buns, when she had assured me earlier that they did. I ordered the steak and frites instead. The steak was overdone and dry. The waitress offered me whiskey sauce, since they didn't carry steak sauce. The whiskey sauce cost me another 2 pounds, and tasted suspiciously glutenous. As a visitor to Canterbury, I enjoyed literally every meal until this one. While the meat pies and fish and chips looked excellent, I do not plan to return since they can't accommodate my food allergy well. It is probably a better bar...
