Such a wonderful beautiful place. One of the most popular & modern places in Chelmsford imo .. like a place you’d find in the West End or on a Baleriac island .. prices are pretty reasonable for such a place too! Waiters and management couldn’t have been more professional, friendly , attentive and perfect customer service. Give you all the time in the world to even take family photos! Gorgeous setting with her looking the river .. seating outside and the shutters all opened up on the warmer days and has a holiday feel place to it .. lovely coffee barista part at the front and also a bar whether you want a real nice coffee and a bar snack or some amazing cocktails or glass of champagne. I’m TEETOTAL so they do an amazing choice of Mocktails and only around £5 and a beautiful mocktail made up with palm leaves and big chunks of pineapple like an ibiza long drink! Gorgous home stone baked pizzas and lots of other various dishes .. good mains with fresh fish and also spoilt for choice with small plates/ sides/ starters which is great for me as I have a small appetite. My boys loved the freshly cooked double burgers and the triple cooked chips and the stone baked mozerella garlic flat bread was to die for! Gorgeous quieter restaurant where we ate but also at the front part there are gorgeous chase lounges and sofas with or without tables .. ans can mingle there .. have drinks .. and even bring your precious dogs! and this was just a normal thursday night! Definitely booking many more nights here as they have amazing DJs and comedy nights and top West end singers to enjoy as you dine or drink there. I couldn’t fault A Canteen and I thank you for making my birthday last minute get together meal for myself and my boys so special x

Acanteen My partner and I came here on Sunday for brunch. We didn’t book a table and it was quite busy so they gave us a table in the lounge area. This area is counter service, and after we decided on food and drink I went up to the bar to order. The girl behind the bar was clearly distracted and had a lot of trouble with our order. We ordered the Verde Eggs and a build your own breakfast. Our drinks came out quick, but I’d ordered an extra cup with the pot of tea that didn’t come. That was okay because we asked the server and she brought one immediately. Then we waited and waited and waited. No one brought us cutlery or tap water. No one checked in on us. 30 minutes later our food came and a welcome sight that was. Mind you, we still had to take cutlery from another table. Unfortunately, they had forgot the bacon on the byo breakfast and hadn’t included any syrup or butter for the pancakes. We requested the bacon and found out that they hadn’t included that in the order. Fortunately, they brought it out and didn’t charge us. The atmosphere was nice. It was calm and clean and there was a good amount of space between tables, you didn’t feel packed in. The food was okay, the verde eggs had a nice combination of components but nothing shone through. The pesto got lost behind the heaps of guacamole. The build your own breakfast was also swamped by guacamole, but the bacon and sausage were tasty. Overall, the service really let this place down and the food was just okay.

Disappointing Sunday lunch. The good points. The staff were very pleasant but we were served by at least 6 different people and the lack of continuity may have played it's part. Yorkshires were a good size and quite tasty and the lamb was the best of the meat. The not so good bits. Drinks - one of the drinks wasn't as described on the menu (missing it's cream and extra bits) but we decided it wasn't worth making a point about it. All 5 of us ordered the roast lunch. 3 dinners were delivered along with a portion of cauliflower cheese for 2. We were then asked if that was everything. Surprisingly it wasn't. Asking where the other two dinners were seemed to come as a surprise - back to my earlier point, if we had had the same waiter they would have known we'd ordered 5 dinners. Apologies made but no real explanation as to where the dinners had got to but one of the party did get an extra drink for their trouble. This was the same drink as before but this time it also came with a candy cane and biscuits but still without the cream. We did seek clarification re the miniscule amount of cauli and extra was brought out. The two missing turkey dinners came without their pigs in blanket, all of the sprouts were like marbles and the roast beef was extremely tough and over-cooked. No doubt other people have had good food here but the experience was very disappointing. Not a place I shall be re-visiting.

We went to A Canteen for a quick birthday brunch and the whole experience just wasn’t very nice… -we didn’t get sat down for a while. - kept getting bombarded by 3 different waiters to order our drinks the second we sat down, we didn’t even have time to have a look at the menu and it was just clear there was no communication between the waiters. - I ordered a bagel with smash avo and poached egg and my partner ordered chicken and waffles …. The food was not presented nicely at all, the bagels were dry and not even buttered, the avo was just ploped in the middle of the plate with no care and the eggs were basically hard boiled … no seasoning or dressing at all. The waffles were nice but everything was clearly shop bought and really not worth the money. - the waiter then brought our iced coffees and spilled both (not entirely) as he was setting them on our table which I get things happen but it didn’t add to the experience … - we waited at least 15mins before our plates got cleared and no one checked in on us to check if we were happy with our food either throughout or as they were clearing. - when we complained we just got told that they’d let the chef know, there was no apology or effort to try and make our experience better. We will not be returning….

So good I've been back within a month! I visited A Canteen after being told about it by a friend that lives in Chelmsford. From the start A canteen were helpful in advising where to park and even booked a table for us (although it wasn't really necessary at 9:30am but the gesture was nice). We had a lovely brekkie and Harriet served us, she is lovely. Two weeks later I decided to take my friend last Saturday who loved it! We got there much later and hadn't booked, so had to wait for a while for a table but we didn't mind. We shared a pizza, salad (which was yummy with butternut squash), halloumi and chips. We shared everything to avoid food envy - good decision as we loved everything! We also had bucks fizz (I wanted tea but my bossy friend told me I can have tea any time ha ha). Again Harriet served us and was friendly as ever. I've left two feedback forms and am keeping fingers crossed for a winning meal for two. Oh! One last thing - the handwash in the bathrooms are DELISH and you can buy them! Bergamot, rose, geranium and patchouli. Great marketing and a REALLY nice treat. I'll be back - PLEASE expand to Upminster/Hornchurch. I love this restaurant.

Since moving to Chelmsford acanteen has been on the list to try. Popping by during lockdowns for milkshakes and pastries to takeaway, not to mention the odd pulled pork brioche. Finally we tried it for brunch and were… disappointed. We were seated and despite asking for “2 and a high chair for the little fella” we had to ask someone else again for the high chair. Everyone seated around us had paper menus, we had to go online and flick through a clunky webpage expanding each category to see what was on offer. I get the use of the app to speed up the process and reduce interaction etc with covid but it’s not best for choosing what you want when you’ve not been before. When the food came it was poorly cooked. The sausages on the full breakfast were burnt on the outside and uncooked inside. The poached eggs tasted like they were pickled. For the chicken and waffles, the chicken buttermilk coating was also burnt and the chicken itself very watery inside. The waffles and syrup were nice though. Unfortunately nobody asked how our meal was and the staff seem to have disappeared until we were walking out of the door.
