I should have read the reviews before visiting this place! Very slow service (only 6 people across 3 tables in the entire pub waiting for food), waited 45 minutes for it to arrive. The food was ok but not served how the menu states. We ordered the sharing Camembert which said it came with fresh toasted bread - to us all, that meant fresh bakery style bread. How wrong we were… it came with ordinary toast. When mentioning to the staff, the first person we spoke to was very dismissive, telling us it’s always served with toast and didn’t know what else to suggest. She got her colleague who confirmed it would normally come with crusty fresh bread that has been toasted but had not been delivered. When the manager came over to speak to us, she stank of cigarette smoke and tried to blame the chefs for not informing the front of house staff of the menu changes. She offered a mere £1 off of our bill because that’s how much the bread would have cost…. I explained that I would not have ordered it at a cost of £14.50 if I knew it was coming with standard packet white sliced bread. There is a Co-op next door - they could have gone and purchased part baked baguettes when they realised their delivery had not arrived… this would have been much better than serving toast! The manager did not apologise and in the end, took a whopping £2 off our bill. My friend ordered the burger which she said was ok but unable to eat the bun as it had gone very soggy. No one later checked to see if our meal was ok and when the waitress cleared our table, instead of offering us anything else, she asked if we would like the bill. We will not be returning again. It would appear there is new management within the last few years, which is bringing this...
Read moreQuite a disappointing meal if I’m honest. After seeing previous reviews, I had high hopes for this place but unfortunately it wasn’t our lucky day. Small things matter and sometimes they can be the most important. For example, being seated but never mentioning that food needs to be ordered at the bar. Obviously it came to light but after waiting a while for a non-waiter service. On ordering the meals and drinks, it seemed like there was a slight lack in training how to make an orange juice & lemonade. 85/15 ratio was a bit much. Once the food was ordered it was nice to see it arrive quite swiftly, unfortunately the calamari tasted very fatty and tasted like it had been cooked in old fat. Chewy but that I do understand isn’t easy to avoid. Once I had finished half the starter and gave the remaining calamari a miss, half the cutlery was then taken away and not replaced for when the main came out. Little things I know but they all add up. Then the main courses came out. First the roast beef, which I must say the yorkshire puds were great but all the roast potatoes were so black they were almost unrecognisable. Soggy and burnt and the roast beef was very grey and chewy. The worse thing was the catch of the day. The fish itself seemed ok but the broth it was in was so unpleasant in smell that it was off putting for both to eat anything. Almost thought the fish was rotten it was that bad but it was the broth that had the most god awful smell. Such a shame to be writing this sort of review but I hope it helps in...
Read moreWe were passing through and looking forward to a nice meal after a long journey, but The Star pub left us sorely disappointed. We called ahead to book a table and were initially excited about our meal. The staff promptly took our orders, but then the long wait began. It took 50 minutes for our food to arrive, despite the dining area being nearly empty.
During our wait, the staff were noisily sorting out cutlery, seemingly for the entire month, making the experience unbearable. When our food finally arrived, it was mediocre at best. I ordered a chicken burger and fries; while the fries were nice (reminiscent of McDonald’s, which I consider a positive), the burger was the worst I’ve ever had—completely tasteless, like eating cardboard. My partner ordered fish and chips and found it equally unimpressive.
We paid over £45 for two meals, a pint of beer, and a pint of pop. This price would have been acceptable if the food had been tasty, but unfortunately, it was not. We cannot recommend this place. If you still wish to put yourself through this experience, by all means, avoid the chicken burger.
It seemed more like a drinks establishment for the locals, as there were plenty of people in their work clothes enjoying a pint. Perhaps it’s a nice spot for a drink, but as far as dining goes, it fell short of...
