My rating is on the food, however some concerns. Read towards end of review.
I do enjoy my Fish and Chips and these were the best I've had in such along time. The fish was whiter than white (Cod) and the chips were perfect.
The Fish was battered lightly, crisp and complemented the fish perfectly. The size was ample and satisfying.
The chips double fried, were also amazing. First you get a very handsome portion of chips more than I could manage and these chips are amazing. They tastes traditional to me as in cooked in beef dripping but I can't confirm from the website. The taste was similar to a good old style chips cooked this way. Either way the best chips to complement the fish I've tastes in many years.
The picture of the fish and chips I've added doesn't really do the serving justice as the plate is huge so everything fits on it. It is a huge portion.
Tata Sauce great comes with your order, nice and good portion.
Mushy peas, great these are extra but enough to share between two or three.
The food 5 Stars Would I recommend YES Would I go again YES
My Concerns. . The menu in the restaurant states discretionary 10% Service Charge.
(Sorry I don't agree with included service charge, ask me don't just include it. )
As its discretionary, we asked the waitress to remove the service charge. In our sitting this was £5. The bill was presented to us with the service charge included. Its was then explained that we could pay the sub total only which does not include the service charge. Even though the bill sates Total Bill with service charge added. All very strange.
Card Payment at your table also askes if you want to leave a tip as you pay your bill, which is fine if its going to your servers.
On our visit two of the three servers had problems with our basic questions. But we got there in the end.
My rating is for the food and overhaul cost. It was great food. I would have removed 2 stars because of the service charge but the food was "Propper Fish n Chips" and anyone reading my review is now aware of a service charge.
Remove the service charge, its seen as being deceitful. Your food is amazing don't leave a bad taste on the bill.
The online menu does not show the service charge at the time of writing this review, see images...
Read moreNestled right on the enchanting Victoria Street—the very cobblestoned lane that inspired Diagon Alley in the Harry Potter films—Bertie’s Proper Fish & Chips feels like a portal to a whimsical world straight out of a storybook. On a blustery, rain-lashed afternoon in Edinburgh, when the wind howls off the North Sea and the skies weep endlessly, stepping into this cozy haven is pure magic. The warm glow of fairy lights, the murmur of contented diners, and those vaulted ceilings draped in subtle nods to Scottish folklore create an atmosphere of serene beauty—a calm oasis amid the storm, where the outside world’s chaos fades into a hazy, spellbinding backdrop through fogged-up windows. The service? Spot-on from the get-go. Our server, with a genuine smile that cuts through the damp chill, whisked us to a nook with prime views of the street’s colorful facades, and kept the experience seamless without hovering. It was the kind of attentive care that makes you linger. But the real stars? The food. We dove into their signature fish and chips, and it was a triumph—succulent haddock wrapped in a feather-light, golden batter that crackles with every bite, revealing flaky perfection beneath. Paired with a generous mound of creamy mashed potatoes, velvety smooth and laced with just a hint of buttery richness, it was comfort elevated to art. The chips were fluffy pillars of joy, triple-cooked to that ideal crisp-outside, pillowy-inside texture, and everything arrived piping hot, balancing indulgence with freshness. In that rainy, windy melee outside, savoring these bites felt like a warm hug from the wizarding world itself—cozy, restorative, and utterly wow-worthy. Bertie’s isn’t just a meal; it’s a moment, a magical interlude in the heart of Edinburgh’s Old Town. If you’re chasing that Harry Potter vibe with top-notch nosh, this is your Ollivanders. Five stars, no hesitation—I’ll be back for more spells of...
Read moreMy husband and I and our infant arrived in Scotland this morning with 7 hours to spare before check-in. After researching a good spot for fish and chips, we excitedly came across Berties. With an infant in tow via a stroller, we were so happy to see the accessible elevator however once we arrived to the restaurant entrance, we felt our baby/stroller was more of a burden to the staff (responsible for seating guests) than welcome. I was told I couldn't wait in the waiting area with the stroller (which I understood as it was cramped) and was redirected to a storage area under the stairs. So I took my infant and waited with them to feed them under the stairs while my husband waited for our names to be called. Despite me being hidden and not in the way of anyone spoon feeding my very hungry baby, I was told after some time mid-feed I can't wait there either. While it was said respectfully, you can imagine the frustration and disappointment being told a conflicting message that I could take the stroller back to the very crowded waiting area. Strollers can be folded and kept under tables not in the way of servers or others. I'm hoping this would be more thought out for this to be family friendly (inclusive) restaurant hence the atmosphere and service rating despite the place being outwardly beautiful. I need to exclude the waitresses from this service review as they were exceptionally kind and attentive (5 stars for them!)
The fish was flaky and the crispy batter was delicious but all in all it felt like any good pub could replicate it (a bit of a tourist trap with the pricing too). Tartar sauce needs more of a punch and fries less dry. The passionfruit mocktail was 100/10!
I hope these notes will be taken into consideration to make it a more pleasurable dining...
