I decided to eat out today as my wife and I were celebrating our anniversary . We unfortunately chose the Gurkha. We were greeted by a stony faced waiter who made no effort as we prized the door open to get the pram in(and out)
The place was empty and I asked the waiter if they were open? Apparently they were?
And so we asked for a more comfortable table than the one offered. Next another even more morose waiter does the orders for drinks and then quickly asks our order. I’ had not even got my scarf off. Anyway to cut to the chase the service and vibe was more akin to a funeral.
The food was not amazing, My wife had a mix of different pieces, eg, It was basically DRY ribs, some minced dumpling, some pakora and chicken on the bone with a little sauce dish in the middle. Mine was a Nepalese curry, similar to a bhuna. It was the better choice of the two although nothing amazing and ended up leaving me with indigestion
The food at best was average, but the service was awful. I don’t usually feel compelled to leave bad reviews but I don’t know how they do business. I left a quid as a tip out of awkward etiquette and am annoyed that I even gave that.
The waiters couldn't wait for us to leave and made it obvious as they flapped the closed sign in the window. We sat down to eat at 1.30pm is that late? Anyway ids avoid this place as there are much better curry places in the vicinity. Meh!...
Read moreMy 2 stars go to the waiter and the waitress; who served us very well. I used to live in Jordan Lane next door to this Gurkha restaurant and we ate there so many times because the food was simply succulent!! After my dinner tonight I'm afraid I will never ate there ever! We choose as a starter some onion bahjis and vegetable pakoras:How can the chef make them so dry and they both tasted the same; one with onions the others with peas! For main course I've picked up some tandoori King prawns with a sauce which came separately. That "tomato" sauce was so diluted, it tasted nothing like a Nepalese flavoured sauce. I was SO disappointed in that meal, as I was so looking forward to dine there like the old times. Please bring back a good chef who can cook Nepalese food the way you used to feast us for...
Read moreWent for dinner on a Saturday night. Most important point, we were seated on the lower level, by the window and it was absolutely freezing. There is a gap under the window so we had the outside air (below freezing temps) blowing right on to us. We asked to move and were told the other tables were "colder". We put our coats to eat our starters but were struggling. We asked again we were moved one table up and a small heater above the unused door was switched on. It made no difference. We noticed then that other customers were also wearing their coats. Starters: poppadoms, spice tray and vegetable pakora were excellent. Main course of vegetable thali was good, king prawn tikka masala was so sweet it was inedible. Really disappointed....
