Malt & Hops — Restaurant in City of Edinburgh

Lovely, cosy pub with a broad selection of real ales, local keg and mainline beers as well as a good selection of Scotch whiskies. There is a roaring coal fire (a rarity in Edinburgh), low / warm lighting and rows of dried hops decorating the wooden ceiling beams. The traditional windows and wooden cladding add to the ambience with a casual, relaxed feel. Located on the picturesque ‘Shore’ of the Water of Leith, it is well-served by a number of bus routes. This is a real old man's pub which is slightly hidden. There's a more prominent pub at the crossing and it's flanked by Pizza Express and a more trendy restaurant/cafe.

The beautiful thing about this place is that you can spill out onto the street and enjoy the view of the docks. It's a hole in the wall, so there's not much seating, but that makes it cozy for a few pints. The decoration is eclectic with ceramic whiskey jugs hanging from the ceiling.

Beyond that, the bartender was fast and friendly and do expect strangers to strike up a conversation with you if you look like you're from...

The Malt and Hops is a traditional cozy, friendly pub on the shore at Leith.

Inside is unusual with bunches of hops and old mugs/whisky jugs hanging from the ceiling. The walls are adorned with old mirrored beer adverts and other interesting pub/drink memorabilia. There's also a real fire which was great to stand near to on a cold day in December.  If you visit in the summer there are tables outside with views of the Water of Leith. Great selection of beers and whiskies.

Service was excellent and friendly with the lone barman coping well when about 20 of us arrived. 👍😀
