~4.2/5. When you see mostly Chinese inside, you know you have to go! A (for the most part) fantastic and lively authentic south chinese spot in the heart of Edinburgh. I recommend reserving to sit in. We got a big table for 10 and tried a variety of menu options.
They have a la carte options or large plates to share over rice. Me and a buddy got their Spicy Pot and Egg fried rice to share. I liked the spicy pot concept; you get to choose 8 things to have coated in a numbing spicy (mala) oil and other seasonings, its moist but not very saucy. This was phenomenal and a great way to have a variety of things with rice. In particular, their fish was nice and soft, but not soggy or squishy. However they only had ~3 pieces of fish. The potatoes absorbed so much flavor and had a slight fried/crisp quality that was perfect with the oil. However, their egg fried rice was disappointing. For 5.20 you'd expect them to jazz it a little rather than just have Egg, Oil and rice. You're better off getting just plain rice to share. Other satisfied friends got Dandan noodles (great portion, soupy and spicy), Sea bass in chili oil (I tried this, moist fish in a flavorful sauce, I love!), Salted egg prawn (a must try for those who love salted egg!!), mapo tofu, vegetable dumplings (good portion), and hunan pork. One friend got the singapore mee which, although was a great portion, didnt taste of much apart from turmeric and salt. I hope this was a once-in-a-while bad dish, but he wasnt too happy. I also had the Pu'er Tea, glad to see they have a variety of teas. It had good price/quality and I would get it again. Service was friendly and quick, the lady was happy to serve us and they were generally quick with the food. The store was busy so I recommend reserving well in advance. They have a bar-style seating for solo dinners too. Because the shop is slightly crammed, it can sound a little hectic. One table nearby us was particularly loud and we could hear their entire conversation. Of course, this isn't entirely the restaurants fault, but a problem enhanced by the compact nature...
Read moreORDERED VEGAN FOOD, FOUND SHRIMPS AT THE BOTTOM. This is the first time I am writing a restaurant review as I have never had such a bad and unprofessional experience before. I went there last night with my partner as I read somewhere that they had good vegan options. I was happy to see, that the menu clearly shows which food is vegan (vg) and I ordered the „hot and sour potato starch noodles“. When it arrived, nothing indicated it wouldn’t be vegan, as it was garnished with potato slices, tofu, and seaweed, so I started eating. After a while, a shrimp popped out beneath the glass noodles and when I dug some deeper, I found three more of them. After telling the staff I was simply asked „oh, you wanted it vegan?“ - let me set this straight, it was not a dish that had a „vegan option available“, the dish was clearly declared as vegan! This was also not some mixup or mistake in the kitchen - they simply declare food as vegan, not knowing what it actually means. God knows what they use for their broth - potentially fish sauce or similar. This is absolutely unacceptable and I think the restaurant is not aware that it is a criminal offence to declare something vegan when it is not. Apart from that, the food is totally overpriced for its quality. We had dumplings for £10 and it is save to say that those were the worst dumplings I have ever had. The reason their food is so overpriced is probably because they have 4 front of house members working at the same time for about the same amount of occupied tables, standing around because they have nothing to do, staring at you while you’re...
Read moreMake sure to book a table at this Chinese restaurant to skip the long wait, because this place is always buzzing! Despite its small size, it packs a punch with a menu brimming with choices, making it a haven for food enthusiasts. What sets this spot apart is the authentic taste that stands out significantly from other Chinese eateries I've visited. Every dish I tried was simply outstanding, bursting with flavors that tantalize the taste buds.
I particularly fell in love with their grilled sea bass - it's a must-try for anyone visiting. The sweet and sour crispy pork, which leaned more towards the sweet side but was undeniably scrumptious. The contrast between the crispy exterior and the tangy sauce made every bite a delight. Venturing further into the menu, I opted for the tofu with century egg, a dish not for the faint-hearted but absolutely rewarding for those who appreciate its unique taste - count me in as a fan!
Taking a gamble, I also sampled the pork intestine, a choice that might raise eyebrows for some but is truly a hidden gem for the adventurous eater. It was incredibly flavorful, proving that sometimes, the most unlikely dishes can be the most satisfying.
If you're feeling bold, take a leap and pick a random dish from the menu. You might just be pleasantly surprised by the culinary adventure that awaits. This restaurant is a gem for anyone looking to savor genuinely delicious and authentic...
