Friday "Buck-a-shuck" with today's prices is simply going to be shan - the Ox presented the entire plate very poorly as a water-filled tray with full-size ice cubes sliding over soaking napkins, servers failed to bring out the accompanying items, and most of the oysters were the smallest morsels of oyster I've ever had. They were at least fresh and shucked with basic skill, thankfully.
Although a disappointing dish, we were there for a meal and drinks too, but unfortunately our service was poor from start to finish, with servers in a rush and constantly bumping into patrons seats whilst managing to ignore clearing dishes. I nearly had another tables oysters dumped on my head, which we all sort of laughed off, but clearly the service needs better training or more help. This "service" was already added to the bill (12%, I think) which has become a ridiculous practise recently.
On balance, the dishes were a mix of delightful and disappointment, but when the best stand-out is the chips it's hard to be excited about their kitchen.
Years ago I rated this place 5 stars, probably due to their excellent Sunday roast. Maybe they should stick to doing what they do well and not much else. In a city full of impressive venues I'm not keen to come back, particularly when I'm held hostage with subpar service added to the...
Read moreBeen to this pub a few times for food, which is always pretty good as far as classic pub food goes. I felt the need to leave a review after our experience this evening though, due to how rude our waitress was.
Having worked in many different roles and many different businesses in the hospitality industry in Edinburgh, I always prefer to give servers the benefit of the doubt especially on a busy Saturday night. However, the server in the dining room this evening was just flat out rude to a baffling extent.
On a side note, the burger buns weren’t very nice. Also, the trend of bringing one tablespoon of ketchup at a time to a table is annoying, although I suspect this is driven by the desire to buy in bulk for the sake of sustainability rather than buying individual ketchup bottles. The quality of the food has also decreased somewhat, despite the fact that the price has increased a lot (although that likely can’t be helped).
Overall, the Ox is always good for a nice, relaxed atmosphere if you’re in the mood for better than average pub food. Typically, the service is good (the host was lovely and even laughed at my dad’s bad jokes), but servers with an attitude like the woman who was working this evening should stay behind the bar pouring pints where people might...
Read moreThe worst service in a restaurant while visiting Edinburgh and actually EVER. Made a booking for 7 people as the reviews said that they have a great Sunday roast. We arrived 15 minutes late with 3 kids and were offered table with bar chairs. When we mentioned to the waitress this is not suitable for kids we were told everyone else booked. Well...so did we! We were then transferred to a table suitable for 5.... Ordered our drinks & food and were told there was a wait. So little did we know. After 35 minutes that not a single waiter came up to check on us we enquired what's with our food and then were told we had another 10 minutes wait (45 minutes wait at this point). 10 minutes later we enquired again and were told that there was still one table before us waiting for their food meaning another 15-20 minutes wait! When we confronted the waiter he claimed he told us there was a wait (yes. But not of more than an hour!) and they are doing there best (if so why weren't we offered any compensation during the long long wait? Even bread or olives would have done the work and why no one came up to apologize?). At this point we just got up and left. At least we weren't asked to pay for the 2 beers &...
