I work as a hospitality manager in the grassmarket so I have been itching to try the coffee here for a while now but it was always closed when I went passed or I didn’t have the time on the way to work! I thought the artwork outside was cool, the open style cafe where you can see the barista make it was awesome touch but my gosh am I disappointed. I had my bike outside so I put my head in to apologise and ask for a coffee while I stood at the door to make sure I have an eye on the bike so it doesn’t get nicked. The man made hardly a glance and said “I’m going to need that door shut” with not much politeness. He asked me what I wanted so I said flat white with one brown sugar please. Well that didn’t make him happy at all. “You can have a flat white or not because we don’t do sugar here, sorry” he followed that up without a glance and said “actually I’m not even sorry”. I was stunned. I am new to the coffee scene and so I do still prefer a wee bit of sugar in it, I really wanted to try this place to see if it could be my regular and I could experiment with coffee but absolutely not. As I said before, I am in a senior level in the hospitality industry so I know the customer service rulebook obviously and this was just appalling. His attitude towards me was really the bit that made me upset, no eye contact no smile no genuine sorry nothing. Please let it be known that I will not be coming back and will be telling folk at my work not to bother as I was excited to tell my colleagues about the coffee. And if this guy working today was the manager then all I can say is good luck with that attitude, you may think your coffee tastes great but bad service puts...
Read moreonly took photos after finishing our drinks but okay
i had a batch brew and loved the coffee, kept thinking about it the whole day. other drinks were not giant, a proper sized cortado, long black, etc.
the place is really small, with a specific vibe. not necessarily my favourite, however, that’s purely my preference, so not gonna judge anything based on that.
the bar is open, which means there is no separation between the barista and customers. i wasn’t quite sure about that in the beginning, however, i was very interesting to look at all the gear. in addition, that provides the barista the ability to engage with customers more, explain the beanz and stuff like that. u don’t see that layout in many shops, but i found it very curious.
if you are okay with not calm music, it also possible to come and do some of your activities, i was knitting, for example. again, the music choice is not bad, just a part of the atmosphere, so no judgment on that front as well.
overall, really enjoyed my visit, and recommend people to visit this place, either to sit in or takeaway (save the planet, get your own...
Read moreWe headed here before catching a train from Waverley. They use coffee roasted themselves and have excellent knowledge of their product. We had a flat white (pictured) and cappuccino using their Kenyan blend, and both were excellent. A decaf espresso followed and this had an interesting complexity not often found in decaf. Despite not really needing any more beans at home for a while, I had to grab a bag and was glad to hear they offer free postage.
There was a small range of food on offer but it's clearly been selected carefully. The jammy dodger cookie (pictured on the train) was very special but the real star was the sandwich. The fried aubergine option was the best sandwich I've had in a very long time.
The owner is very knowledgeable and shares what he knows freely, helped by the counterless design. This made for a less formal space and encouraged interaction.
Overall, this was a great visit and I'll definitely be returning next time I'm...
