I visited RANA’s Indian grill house tonight for what I think is their second night trading to the public. I was keen to try out their food (South Indian and also British-Indian favourites), it certainly did not disappoint. To start we shared some poppadoms and a pickle tray, the kerala rolls, a chicken bhuna and paneer shashlik. All the starters were brought out pretty much at the same time, on hot plates which was a nice touch because let’s face it who wants hot food on a stone cold plate?
For main we opted for the Kashmiri lamb shank, lamb karahi and a mughlai chicken along with multiple naan breads. All food was presented well and tasted really good, the favourite was the lamb shank. The food took slightly long to come than expected and our starter plates were still sat on the table for some time after finishing, but it was absolutely understandable given they have just opened so bound to be still learning the ropes with everything… by no mean did it cause a negative experience.
I would like to make some constructive comments that I hope you take onboard in good spirit as it by no means detracted from our overall experience: firstly, I think the pickle tray dip sizes are too small - by the time we had split each dip by 3 there really wasn’t that much to go around. Secondly, the Rana’s draught beer tasted very light, it kind of lacked any real deep taste that you would get with a premium beer. I don’t know if it was aimed to be similar to a bud light/ coors light but I think there really are so many better options in terms of taste that the restaurant could go for. Thirdly, I think some Indian music would have really added a good ambience, there may have been some playing but I could not hear any.
Overall I was really impressed with RANA’s Indian, the presentation and taste was top notch and I’m sure once they’re into the swing of running a full restaurant operation it will be perfect. Look forward to returning soon and wish you all the best of...

We recently dined at Ranas in Doncaster town centre, and it’s safe to say this has instantly become one of our new favourite restaurants.
We started with crispy popadoms and a vibrant pickle tray which set the tone perfectly.
For starters we both chose the Jhinga Taffrani, jumbo king prawns marinated with golden saffron threads, grilled to perfection in the tandoor.
The smoky flavour paired with a fresh avocado coriander chutney and a hint of balsamic glaze was simply divine.
For mains, I had the Shahi Trio Surf & Turf Masala a definite showstopper!
Succulent chicken tikka served on a zesty lemon rice base, surrounded by rich crab meat curry, and topped with two perfectly grilled jumbo prawns. Every element was perfectly balanced and bursting with flavour.
My partner had the Dakshani Seabass Curry, which was equally impressive.
Crispy skinned seabass on crushed potatoes, nestled in a velvety South Indian-style coconut curry a bold and comforting dish with beautiful presentation.
We also shared a side of Aloo Gobi – cauliflower florets in a rich tomato sauce and some gorgeous garlic naan.
To finish we shared the mango cheesecake, served with ice cream and a mango drizzle It was light, creamy, and the perfect end to an unforgettable meal.
Service was warm, attentive, and knowledgeable, and every dish looked like it came out of a fine-dining kitchen.
Highly recommended if you’re in or near Doncaster,...
