Been here before a few times and not had a complaint, that is until today. Very poor experience from the word go. Arrived and stood at the wait here to be seated podium, yet five minutes past watching staff wandering round doing very little on what was a quiet afternoon, so fed up of waiting we wandered in to find our own table unchallenged and sat in a booth were the table needed clearing. No problem I moved the cups and tea pot to the front and waited another five minutes before this young waitress walks over and we ask for the menu, only to be met with attitude that we shouldn't have just walked in and sat down as they'd need to clean the table first. OK then let's follow the rules even though it's a chippy and not a 5 star restaurant. So we got up and she walked us back to the wait here to be seated podium and stood there then she says take a seat here and wait to be seated. OK then again we'll follow the rules. Another five minutes past and she comes back gets two menus then waalks off again, ah well, so sat bired and hungry, watching another member of staff slowly placing packets of sugar or something into a wooden tray. Then in comes two more customers and the member of staff says please follow me to them, so I says excuse but we're still waiting to be seated, to which she replied, your waiting for a booth and it needs to be cleaned before you can sit there and she walks off with the two customers. So me and the missus looked at each other and said enoughs enough let's go. Shame really cos in the past the food and staff have been good, but after today, and I could understand it if the place was busy, but I left thinking that's a place I won't be going back to, hence one star and that's because I had to click on one otherwise I can't give any reating for food thiughbi expect it would have been good again. As for service it's a shame there isn't a no star option because it really was that poor. No the customers always right service here more so we'll be rude and have attitude ...

We are regulars at whitbys and come most weeks but on principle and given the way I was spoken to I won’t be coming back.
Prior to ordering I stopped a server and asked whether it was possible to have salad with my scampi. He told me that salad could be ordered as a half and half with any meal… great!
When I got the bill I was questioned why I was charged for my side that came with the scampi meal I ordered to be told when you swap for salad you don’t get a side (even though you get half the chips).
The supervisor Emma admitted I had been told wrong but advised she still wouldn’t take the cost off the bill. To me this is about principle.. she offered to get somebody to explain the bill to me. I am well educated and understand the bill but I wouldn’t have had the side if I knew I was paying for it I ordered it as it was with the scampi meal on the menu! There is no scampi salad on the menu that I was charged for.
I know my mere expenditure won’t make a vast different but I am a regular customer and disgusted to have been treated with such contempt over £2.50!
The manager did arrive after I had paid the bill aware of my complaint but made no effort to rectify the situation . This doesn’t surprise me as a few weeks ago I waited over an hour for some desserts I had ordered and after asking three different people eventually found out they had sold out. When I went to the till the manager served me and these desserts were on the bill. I explained my unhappiness that I had waited an hour etc he offered no apology or gesture of goodwill just...
Read moreReview: Whitby's Fish & Chip Restaurant Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Whitby's Fish & Chip Restaurant offers a delightful dining experience that's well-deserving of its four-star rating. The establishment is a testament to the traditional British culinary staple of fish and chips, delivering on both taste and quality.
During my visit, I made an unintentional order of whitebait, which to my surprise, came as small fish complete with bones, heads, and tails, meant to be eaten whole. While this was not to my liking—a personal preference rather than a critique of the dish itself—it was an adventure into the broader offerings of traditional British seafood.
The main event, the fish and chips, was where Whitby's truly shined. The fish was perfectly cooked, with a crispy batter encapsulating the succulent and flaky white fish inside. Paired with golden, crispy chips, it was a classic dish executed with excellence. The curry sauce was another highlight, adding a delightful and robust flavor that perfectly complemented the meal.
The ambiance of the restaurant is welcoming, providing a comfortable setting in which to enjoy your meal. It strikes a good balance between a casual dining experience and the quality of food you'd expect from a higher-end establishment.
In summary, Whitby's Fish & Chip Restaurant lives up to its reputation, serving up deliciously traditional fish and chips with commendable quality and flavor. Despite the minor hiccup with my order, the overall experience was enjoyable, making Whitby's a recommended spot for anyone looking to indulge in this classic...
