Ruby Indian Restaurant — Restaurant in East Hertfordshire

We travelled into Hertford for the weekend and found this restaurant on the web as we were not familiar with the area. From the moment I telephoned to book our table for two the service and reception was outstanding. We arrived in good time for the seating and received a very warm welcome at the door, we were offered drinks in the bar area then when we were ready we were shown to our table. The food we could not fault in any way, it was so delicious and served with great service and the servings plentiful and a great amount of choice . The building is quaint but not small, with beamed ceilings and the atmosphere was very enjoyable. The staff paid a particular interest in our reason for visiting and made us feel very welcome and not just a number. Sammy was so helpful and friendly he deserves a mention here too. Even the ladies room was immaculate. Just a shame we do not live near to the restaurant or we would frequent this restaurant often, we do hope to make the effort to return in the future even if we have to arrange an overnight stay, it is worth it. Awful! As I group of 16 we were told we could have a normal menu. On the night, only once we were all seated, we were told it had to be a set menu. The set menu just had a list of dishes, no description, so we needed up having to Google them, as there wasn’t a staff member in sight. There were also no veg options. The food took an hour, and then chicken dish I ordered had very little chicken in it, which it made the wait for it even worse. The service was none existent, hence us using to Google to identify the dishes, have to ask for separate veg menus, go and find staff to take coffee orders. No offer of any desserts. The coffee was so old and stale we sent it back, it was undrinkable! When we asked for the bill, they had charged a service charge, for a very below par service. came to this restaurant on an off chance they would have a table. Arrived at the restaurant and was greeted by Sam (i think) . We found out that during the pandemic this is prebooked but we where able to grab a seat. My friebdloving spicy food and myself loving flavoursome food (non spicy) found this restaurant to cater to both. The service was wonderful, and the food was even better. There where a couple of groups in the dining room celebrating an occasion. Ruby's seems like a much loved establishment with passionate members of the team. Parking is easy as there is a car park just down the road. I can already tell you that we have been back again but for a take away this time. Portions are a perfect size to me.
