Despite having been to The Angel on the Green a number of times before lockdown and having great food and a great time, myself and my family visited last night and had a very poor experience. We arrived, our drinks order was taken after some wait, and when they arrived one was missing. Not a huge problem. The red wine was served cold - very unusual, and when the forgotten glass of wine arrived it was the wrong size - again not a huge problem but not great. We then ordered our food - 2x vegan pizzas, 1x pepperoni, 1x scallops and 2x chips. Our food arrived (again) missing one vegan pizza, which the waitress who brought the food (and seemed highly inconvenienced by the task) did not notice. We notified the man who had taken our order, who explained that it was his last shift for some time and he had already mentally checked out (?!?). I understand that service jobs are tiring and difficult but to tell a customer that is completely unprofessional. Both portions of chips were tiny (about eight chips - unacceptable at £3.50 a portion), and the chips were undercooked and looked anaemic. The three of us who received our meals began to eat - the meat pizza and scallops were not great, but fine for pub food but the vegan pizza was unpleasant - way too much plastic-tasting vegan cheese. It was obvious that the chef had never tasted the vegan pizza, nowadays it is very easy to find good quality vegan cheese (especially if you are charging an additional £2 for it), or to use it sparingly if changing suppliers is not possible. One bite and the chef would have realised they had used way, way too much. At one point my father began to choke on his pizza - not at all the fault of the restaurant but none of the staff noticed, brought over water or offered any assistance until asked, although we obviously needed it. When the missing vegan pizza arrived over ten minutes later, this was again unpleasant. We all finished our meals as we were very hungry but not one of us enjoyed them. 10% was knocked off the pizza which was late, which seemed like not nearly enough as it cost nearly £13 (plastic cheese included). Overall, bad atmosphere with staff who clearly don’t want to be there, with poor-to-average food at a premium price tag. Will not be back and will recommend others avoid. The second star is given exclusively to the chap who took our payment who was cheery, friendly, and apologetic. Do away with the others and have...
Read moreAccording to my friends from Italy, the Carbonara at Spaghetti Junction (located within Angel on the Green) is just as good as the Carbonara in Rome.
I have eaten Carbonara in Rome and the Carbonara I had at Spaghetti Junction is the real deal. All pasta is made by hand and the chef hails from Rome.
You can’t book a table and this place fills quickly on weekends. I took my family out on a Saturday around 5:00 p.m. There were a few tables left on our arrival. Food and drinks are ordered at the bar.
I chose the Carbonara priced at £12.95, my wife the Cacio & Pepe, priced at £10 and my daughters had a Margherita pizza each at £9.50. I’m a fan of Cresci on Piccadilly in the town centre and would say the pizza is almost on par for what I consider the best pizza in York. We had a bottle of wine and a couple of bees wiggle out meal of which there is a decent selection. My only gripe was the pasta portions were too small.
The atmosphere in this place is great, relaxed and low key. There is a buzz about this place when it’s busy and a great place to bring visitors from out of town or just a casual meal.
What let’s the place down would be the bar staff. I’ve worked in hospitality in the past dealing with 1000s of customers on a nightly basis so feel I am able to give some constructive criticism. One of my pet hates is managers or staff, sat at the bar doing work (I think that what they were doing) whilst chatting to staff that should be fully engaged with the customer. I also like to be felt welcomed and valued as a customer. On this visit, I was not and was made to feel I was a very very slight nuisance. Also, if you say you are going to bring something to the table once ordered, please have the courtesy to follow through on this.
Re-train your bar staff in the art of customer service. I guess if your are a regular you may get treated...

But my wife's carbonara was definitely NOT a carbonara. It was penne pasta in a bright yellow cheese sauce. When my wife stood up to take her dish back, the supposed chef saw her and they had a discussion where he was quite rude, calling my wife ignorant as apparently that's how a carbonara is in Rome. He then continued to which she asked him to stop insulting her and he threw it back saying she was insulting him. We just left having barely eaten and barely touching our drinks. On the plus side, I've always disliked the place but my wife finds it ok but we will never go back now thankfully.
Side note, I asked my half ITALIAN boss how a carbonara is cooked in Rome and, shock horror, turns out my wife was right.
But like I said, we will never go back. Staff are rude and the food is a blind man's interpretation of what someone thinks Italian food is supposed to be like. 0...
