I came here in a group of 7 looking to get some Lunch before embarking on our walk around the lakes but as soon as we arrived at the door we were made to feel very unwelcome. Me and my friends were disgusted by the disconcerting, rude faces of 2 members of staff staring at us like deer caught in headlights whenever we attempted to ask for seating. They both ignored us for a sustained period of time, faffing about needlessly with napkins before one of the ladies in question turned and asked what it was that we could possibly want in a very harsh, mocking manner. Once she bothered to entertain our inquiry about seating, she abruptly refused our custom, claiming that they were full (Very Deceitful). We had been very polite and patient throughout our ordeal and dressed practically like any other visitor to Grasmere but found ourselves publicly shunned presumably on the grounds of our youthfulness and 'big bunch status'. I cannot comment upon the quality of the food that we were never privy to but I would only recommend this establishment to someone who appreciates being disrespected upon arrival and treated like second...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI am a savage critic, and a chef, and don't usually leave reviews unless I'm stunned or really disappointed. The food here was almost perfect. Just a simple lunch menu, sandwiches, soup, quiche etc, cakes and coffees. The bread and cakes were homemade and you could really tell. I had a quiche, Bakewell and coffee.
The quiche pastry was just right, and the filling light, perfectly seasoned and delicious. A little side offering of interesting, very fresh salad with an excellent vinaigrette and a little potato salad, again nicely seasoned.
The Bakewell pastry was perfectly short, thin on the base but crisp, and lovely airly frangipane - I also ate some of the cheese sandwich that was ordered by my party - really good bread roll, proper sharp cheddar and just the right ammount of a nicely made chutney.
Their sign says they bake their own bread 7 days a week and I'm sure they do. They clearly have passion and skill for baking and bread making.
I'd love to go back in the future and just eat cake until I'm hospitalised.
Oh and the coffee was...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreQuaint tearoom with history. The decor is classic English tearoom, featuring china cups and saucers on the walls and shelves, exposed wooden floor and glass chandeliers. As a history lover, I adored the information card on the table telling you about the history of the building and who the Baldrys were. Lovely to think I was sitting in the same spot where a family once thrived in the 1800s. I ordered rarebit with poached eggs, bacon and mushrooms. It was absolutely delicious, however the wait time for the food was quite long. It took 35 minutes from placing our order for the food to arrive. The staff were very polite and seated us right away, though could have checked in with us to provide an update or let us know the approximate wait time for orders if the kitchen was busy. It was a shame that we had to rush off once finished as our parking had expired. This is the reason for...
