We've been getting takeaways from Bamboo periodically since we first became aware of it several years ago and they have consistently been outstanding - we've never had a single dish that hasn't been excellent. We knew it was good the first time we tried it but didn't have too much to benchmark it against, having only eaten at Thai restaurants a couple of times before. Since then, we've regularly found ourselves at the end of a weekend fancying a Penang or a Massoman - and this is the reason why we've tried nearly all of the other Thai restaurants in York (and there's plenty of them) - because Bamboo are closed on a Sunday and Monday and for some reason, these seem so often to be the days we decide to get a takeaway. By the way, I'm not complaining about their being closed (although I wish they weren't!) - they're a small family business and need to keep that time for their family. As a consequence though, having thought about having a Thai and then whet our appetites on many occasions and repeatedly forgetting Bamboo were closed, we would decide to try an alternative each time to see if any compared. We've had takeaways from: The Old Siam; My Thai; Khao San Road; Thida Thai; The Monkey and Dog. We've also previously dined in Phranakhon Thai Tapas; Sangthai restaurant. We're spoiled for choice in York for Thai food as all of these are decent restaurants - some are excellent, but despite this fact, we think Bamboo are the best by a considerable margin. The variety of ingredients in their curries for example - my new favourite, their red curry has aubergine, bamboo, mushrooms, green beans, onions & chillies, not to mention plenty of chicken - all cooked to perfection. The quality of their ingredients stands out as well - the spare ribs are by far the best spare ribs we've ever had - I didn't realise you could get so much meat on a spare rib! The prawn crackers are the nicest I've had as well - really crispy and not at all greasy. They are unbelievably consistent as well - we've had dozens of takeaways from there and the food has never been anything other than exceptional. We sometimes think about having a different takeaway but struggle to justify it as we'll only end up thinking - it's not as nice as Bamboo! I hope they continue to be successful as we'd be gutted if they...
Read morewe ordered from Bamboo Thai after family wanting to try it for over 2 years.
I'm sceptical of Thai food as fish sauce is used in a lot of dishes and I'm vegetarian and ive had bad experiences in the past. however, the rest of the family love the cuisine. I messeged the restaurant on Facebook explaining my concerns about fish sauce etc and they responded quickly and were incredibly helpful.
after talking to the team on Facebook, I rang to place my order. the girl on the phone was very polite, helpful and also very knowledgeable about the menu and checked with the chef to make sure my chosen dish could be made to my specification.
We collected our food. it was ready at the exact time I was told it would be. After getting the food home we found the food to not only be perfectly portioned, but absolutely delicious. no negative or neutral feedback at all.
after our takeaway, we'll be visiting to dine in very soon. this could quickly become our go to for Thai in York as it's...
Read moreAwful food for the price tag. Ribs boiled in gravy and served as succulent ribs🤢 Rubbery calamari? Tamarind duck? How can your special dish be the worst?
Did they hire a menu dress up? Seriously everything reads like a top class menu. But what is served is not any better than what you would get from a canteen.
We also ordered the green curry. I think they spent more time making the green colouring and not paying attention to anything else.
