Don't be put off by the exterior. The Waggon and Horses is right on the main road and has a bus stop outside with student accommodation opposite. Trying to find the entrance at the rear of the pub was a little difficult, and the car park only has room for a couple of vehicles.||However once inside the place it is charming, very welcoming staff, wooden panelled walls, intimate bar rooms, no gambling machines or intrusive sports TVs, and great beer, well kept||We chose the bedroom with the extra large double bed, which was an under statement. We needed a map to find each other on it! The mattress was on the firm side which I prefer. |The room itself was very large, with two easy chairs, a wardrobe and table The obligatory large TV, adequate supply of tea and coffee. The only downside was the room overlooked the main road and was directly over the bus stop. You also have to remember that York is a university town and students do like to celebrate the coming of the weekend ( we were staying on a Friday).||Breakfast served in one of the small bars. Neatly laid out with good supply of cereals, fruit and yoghurts. Good breakfast menu with Full Yorkshire/ Various eggs on toast/Pancakes and other items to tempt the appetite.|We asked whether they had veggie sausages which I opted for, but sadly it was assumed that my wife also wanted the meat free option. So her plate was delivered with veggie sausages AND meat bacon. Not a big complaint but did spoil her enjoyment of the breakfast as she was looking forward to the real Yorkshire sausages.||However, overall a lovely place to stay within easy walking distance of York centre. Would...
Read moreWithout doubt the WORST B&B I’ve ever stayed in.😂👎||Honestly £100 for the room I stayed in - Room 7 - was unbelievably grasping and sneaky.||I GUARANTEE the proprietor/manager/staff wouldn’t part with £100 to stay in Room 7 at the Waggon and Horses.||And ‘yes’ I did t have the guts to complain upon arrival by then again, the owners didn’t have the guts to apologise to me upon arrival for putting me up in such sub-standard accommodation. The room was worse than an Australian backpacking hostel.||Extending my arms, I could touch each wall meaning. The width of the room was under 6ft. Length wise, it must have been 8ft? The mattress was deformed, the pillows appalling, the sheets smelled vaguely of unusedness for long timeness but not unwashed.||The television, or iPad glued to the wall, was virtually unviewable even to someone with 20x20 vision who was not sat within a metre of it. ||Bathroom window casement rattled, blind clanked and when wind blew, exposed you to dog walkers at street level if you were stepping out of the shower… (in fact, the shower was pretty good) … and the noise from outside.||I sat on bench on the street outside until the sunset after 22:00 as it was preferable to being in Room 7. Breakfast ok.||Service by mangeress- ‘singing ‘Size of a Cow’ - was friendly and I’d give her 5/5 but everything else… abysmal. 😂||If this was the last B&B left in York, and I had to be in the city for work again, I’d sleep under a tree in a park. Generally I look for the good in hotels but nearly impossible in...
Read moreNice friendly staff ,stayed the night as went to the Barbican to see a comedian & was literally 5 mins walk . There was parking onsite just make sure you get in early as was quite tight.
The Room was warm & cosy ,ensuite clean but was let down with the disgusting condition of the shower rose ,looked like it hadn't been cleaned for months (legionella anyone ) . So unfortunately didn't feel safe using the shower . There also seems to be a issue with the mains pressure as both the cold tap & the toilet cistern took forever to fill up & the cold tap just stopped . Not great when trying to brush your teeth . The bed wasn't the most comfortable either & both myself & my wife had a bad night's sleep along with the noise of rattling extraction fans from other rooms think they could all do with replacing for some quite ones .
We went down to the bar & had drinks ,good draught beers on tap & the real fire was welcome as it was bitterly cold outside . We asked for the menu but food wasn't available ,so went to the pub next door . Next morning Breakfast was self service for cereal & hot food was waited on . The morning staff didn't have any pleasantries not once were we asked how our stay had been . The hot food was nice & tasty but felt rushed as though we'd out stayed our welcome . Went to hand the room keys in & again no mention of how was our stay ?. Unfortunately ive scored a three for the above reasons ,a shame really as the pub itself & bar staff & food are let down...
