This is a great small historic building, an old defensive red brick tower on the Bar Walls. It has recently been fitted out with all modern conveniences and become a local community hub, which currently runs a weekly PAYF cafe, regular craft activities, supermarket surplus food outlet, advice sessions and occasional special events to tie in with other things happening in York. Read moreBeen to York many times, but never done the wall walk until Sunday 3rd November. It's a good walk. Sometimes a bit scary, as the railings don't go all the way round, and the path does thin out in parts. But we enjoyed it, and then had lunch in one of the pubs in the shambles. The only thing that we thought it needed was better signage. When you come off at one of the breaks in the wall, there are no directions as where to get back on. But we found it eventually with the help of the lady in Clifford's tower. We did notice that there were leaflets at one of the places we came off, probably with a map inside. We just got on at the wrong place, but still enjoyed seeing the sites...
Read moreMy wife and I was walking the city walls of York on a rainy Saturday morning, we came across the red tower, the kind gentleman that was outside welcomed us to use the facilities that they have, use of the toilet and a chance to fill our water bottles, he then informed us that there was a talk about to start up stairs so we went up, upstairs there was another gentleman who was conveying the history of the red tower, one of the interesting things to hear about the tower is they collect food for the food banks there, all of the staff are volunteers and they give up so much of their time to help others, I felt that was really heart warming, thank you the staff at...
